I have read numerous reports/threads that the build quality of the Prime is far better than any previous ZR products - Is this true? I even read one that stated it was on par build wise with a SLC bino. What are the thoughts on the build of the bino?
Also, I have the opportunity to purchase a pair of 10x42 primes for under $500...Is their a binocular out there that is any better for under $500?

That was probably me.  It is still true, IMO.  The Prime is easily the best built Chinese manufactured binocular I have used.  The Leupold McKinley is similarly built (similar in other ways as well).

The Prime I tested was excellent optically.  However, I have since seen another copy that was significantly lower performing.

I would look at the copy you are interested in buying first.  If you like it, then I would think $500 was a pretty good deal.

If you can find a good deal, the Meopta Meostar HD is still my favorite binocular for overall balance of build, performance, and value.

Gotta agree with Matt.  However saying things like that can cause the fur to fly in some places Big Smile

The Prime HD and the new McKinley HD look as well built as the Zeiss Conquest which stars in a video showing it being dragged down a gravel road on a rope behind a pickup bumper and surviving two blasts from a 12 gauge.  I'm not quite brave enough to try that with either my Prime or McKinley.

They are however excellent binoculars and if made exactly the way they are, but in a European factory, you'd be looking at a $1,500-2,000 binocular.

There are always other choices that people like better than others.  Matt mentioned the Meopta. HD.  There is also the Zeiss Conquest HD and the Vortex Razor HD, but the cost is several huindred dollars higher that either the Prime or the McKinley.
