i just got a bushnell 3x9 trophy xlt and when i was bore sighting it with my laser bore sighter at 25 yard or so i noticed that when i zoomed in the point of impact shifted pretty significantly.  i am pretty new to scopes but i don't know if i have noticed this when doing my other scopes. is this normal??? i would like to do some shooting at less than 100 yards and maybe the 3x9 isnt right for my application?  i wonder if i should have just gotten a vortex crossfire in the same power, about the same price and from what i have read they are superior.

Cheaper scopes sometimes experience this, its not normal for decent scopes, or acceptable. if you can return the XLT and get the vortex, i think you'd be better off.

I missed a beautiful deer in Mississippi a few years ago due to this same problem.

It happens allot with less expensive scopes.

I have no experience with the Crossfire.

Could just be a lemon from Bushnell.  I would try to have it replaced.  I hope Bushnell's Customer Service treats you right.

could it just be that it was only 25 yds or so , maybee 100 yds it would not do that. i chose a 3x9 so that i could do some less than 100 yd shooting and 100 plus shooting also. if the poi shifts that much maybe id be better off with a red dot or perhaps a adjustable objective lense would help?

Send it back if you can.

Take a look at this one:

And if you can find room in your budget:

I would check it at 100 yds first.  At 25 yds you may have parallax playing tricks on you.

POI movement could also be caused by the boresighter, rifle,or both moving as you zoom the scope.  A couple shots for verification can't hurt.

As pointed out,  POI should not change as the power ring is moved...period.  It probably is not a parrallax problem at 25 yards, but could magnify the change at longer distances.  Don't give it a second chance at 100 yards or better either.  Remember whatever error exists at 25 yards will be magnified 4x at 100 yards and 8x at 200, so what might seem an insignificant error at 25 is a serious problem at 200.  Just be sure the error at 25 is there.  The best way is with a boresighter with a grid.  You can see the crosshair either remain on the same place, or move in the grid as the magnification is changed.  You can quantify the movement with the boresighter.  With the laser dot, be sure the rifle is firmly placed so that the slight torque applied from twisting the ring is not being transferred through the rifle and that it is the reticle moving, not the dot or the rifle.

Personally, I'd bump the $30-40 for the Vortex Diamondback or one of the original Vipers.  The Sightron scope gets some nice comment, but that's one I have never used.

Maybe this review would be useful too.

I've got an S1 3-9x40.  Nice scope optically and functionally but I found the eye relief to be a good bit less than the specs showed. So although it lived through a couple range sessions on my lt wt .300 it's been on my SIL's 94/22mag for 3yrs now with no problems.
As far as the XLT goes if you feel your getting  POI changes without any unwanted interferences then return it.  I will say that POI changes aren't limited to just low cost scopes though.

THEY SAY THE SIGHTRON IS ABOUT 3.5 TO 4" EYE RELIEF, THE BUSHNELL XLT SAYS 4.0 BUT MORE LIKE 2.5 OR MAX 3." SO IF THE SIGHTRON IS 3" AT LEAST IT WILL WORK OK.

Personally if you were wanting to stay with bushnell, I'd look into the Elite 6500 series, or even a good cond or new Elite 4200 series. I know a few people that those are the only bushys they will own.

I'd avoid the Crossfire series from Vortex. The rest of their stuff is pretty good to excellent, but the Crossfires are poop.

I agree neilbilly the crossfire is not very good, But I have a sightmark triple duty 4-14X44 and I love it had a problem and the manufacture replaced it for me a 100% free didnt even charge me shipping I am very happy with it and the 4-16 has the parallax adjustment and the 3-9 doesnt.
