I will be getting a Weatherby Vanguard stainless/synthetic bolt action deer hunting rifle in the 7mm Remington Caliber.  I am debating on scopes between the Ziess Conquest 3-9 x 40mm  (z-plex) and the Leupold VX-III 3.5-10 x 40mm (duplex).  I am not looking to spend anymore than the price of these.

What is a better scope for my situation?  are there any other scopes that would be at this level that will be better for me?

I will hunt in northern MI along corn field and in woods.  And an occasional trip out west.

thanks

Both are good scopes, but, I believe that the Conquest is better optically.

+1 for Conquest. Better glass than the leupi. However, it may be hard to beat Leupold's CS.
I'm no expert, or currentpert; just a prepert.

Eye relief about the same
Customer service, both excelent
Check out the fields of view.

You can see throught the Zeiss.  I would use the 4a reticle for better usable viewing area.

Both good scopes in the price range.

I own some Zeiss but think you would be happy with either.

could save a few bucks and give the 4200 Elite 3x9 a whirl ...Excellent value, equal optically to your selections, has Rainguard, and could have it with mounts for around $325.

I own about four Elite 4200's, though I think they are the best value for the money they are not equal to Zeiss Conquest. My hunting buddy has Conquest's on his rifle and they are better scopes.

My .02 cents

Hello SNIPE, and welcome to the Optics Talk forum. As a former Leupold user, Vari-X 111, and VX3, I currently own and use nothing but Zeiss. The Leupolds are a good scope but the Conquests are a GREAT scope! In my opinion, superior clarity, superior color and contrast, and as I always say, that reticle is oh so sexy! Crisp and black! All around better value. Once you try one, you will never go back to Leupold.  Hope this helps, Bricat.  P.S. I also live/hunt Northern Michigan.

I am down on Germany and German products for political reasons, but have to agree that the Zeiss is probably better.  Of course, I am not a big Leupold fan, either.  I am looking for "options" other than either of those, but if I were spending the money and only had those two as choices, I would have to go with the &(*^&*^)= *(& German product.

Aside from the better optics on the Zeiss Conquest, they also have a fairly constant eye relief. If you have ever used any variable power scope from Leupold, especially from all shooting positions, you know what I am talking about. Try this with different layers of clothing and it gets even more interesting. Don't gets me wrong, Leupold makes a good scope with first class Customer Service, but once you have tried a scope with a fairly constant eye relief, like the Conquest, it will become more difficult to adjust to the variable eye relief that Leupold has on all their variable scopes.

Come on .... ZEISS smokes leupolds !  Their lenses and design are much better and always have been . And sorry 4200's don't even come close .... as Harriershot told you .  I thought I'd have to be truthful even if it means stepping on some buddies toes .

I love Nikons .... but would take a good Zeiss anyday .

No disrespect intended, but I don't think there is as much distance between a Conquest and a 4200 than you elude too.

Well, I like 'em, too....but Leupold would be the bottom brand if I was looking for a great new scope....and I wouldn't even consider anything less than the new VX-III.  Bandito

Oh boy, another good old Leupold bashing session.  I am telling you guys, you all must have Retinitis Leupold-Pigmentosa.  All of my Leupolds have crisp clear optics, that while are not up to my Trijicon and Kahles, do come close.  I would not call them a world apart.  I would not even call my Bushnell Legend 3x9 50 mm a world apart.  All the people that buy them and love them cannot be wrong.  The only reason I did not buy them for the longest time is that everbody and his brother has one around here, so I bought something else to be different.  The three VX-IIIs that I own are great and I would not trade them for their specific applications for any other scope.
