Getting ready to pull the trigger for hunting binos.
Was thinking about leupold golden ring 8x42 until started reading about the zen ray ED2 8x43. Has anybody compared the 2. Never heard of zen ray until now.

I own both--10x43 Zen ED II's purchased last August from SWFA.  They were the in the first batch to leave SFWA--
I purchased the Leupy Gold Ring 10x42 three weeks ago from an outfitter over run.
Light gathering--close to the same--hard to distinguish a winner in the am or pm in SC hunting deer since Aug 15.
CA--zens hold slight advantage.
Build quality--Leupy is built better, at least by feel.  Don't get me wrong--the zen's are solid, the Leupy just feels better.  Also, I couldn't keep the objective covers to stay on the Zen's, one was even lost on the first hunt last August just going from the truck to the stand through the woods.  The GR's covers are perfect.
Overall, the Zen's were a great buy.  I think they are 250 to 300 cheaper than the GR's--and the image is almost the same.

I ordered a Zen Ray 7x36 EDII recently that ran about $360.  I also picked up a 8x32 Gold Ring non-HD at a bargain price for only $339.  The GR felt more solid, looked better, geat optics, and love the pupilary distance lock. The Zen had a sloppy focus ring, tremendous curvature at the outer edges, and just a cheap "Made in China" look about them, but they did seem to have a bit more "pop" in the center of the view only. Sent the Zens back and kept the Leupy - no regrets whatsoever.

thanks SCHunter, I hunt in SC also. My buddies all have Steiner 8x56 nighthunters, but I just cant swing the big price tag. My leupold scope has been great,so I  know their quality.
