New: ZEN ED2 10x43 Binoculars with Dielectric Prism Coating
New: ZEN ED2 10x43 Binoculars with Dielectric Prism Coating

If the regular zen ed are so good than how much better can these new ED 2'S be. I guess the new ED2's are diealetic prisms and vivid brite coatings and the plain ED'S Are silver coated prisms . can that really make that much of a difference between silver and diealetic coated prisms.  it's just kinda hard to believe that $400 chinese binos are right up there with the high end European brands. Are they really that good.

Its not hard to beleive if you actually study what goes into a high quality bino.  Just because the high end brands charge $2k+ for their top end binos doesn't mean they are proportionately good.  There are other factors besides performance that influence the price.

The dielectric coatings should let somewhere in the range of 5-7% more light through the prism, which will amount to maybe 2-3% more light to the eye.  Some people will be able to see than more easily than others.  It should give a bit better color and maybe a bit better contrast as well.  As far as just the image is concerned, the ED 2 probably is not a large enough difference to go immediately into trade mode, although some difference will likely be observable for most people.  The image difference will be more profound for some, and less profound for others.

The big practical difference in the ED 2 is not the dielectric prism coatings.  One serious complaint about the ZEN ED was the very slow 2 1/2 turn focus wheel travel.  That apparently has been much reduced and many people will really like that.  Also there is the addition of the repellent coatings which function like Rain Guard or Lotu Tech and serve to bead water and resist oil smudges from fingers, making them better for use in inclement weather.  The ED 2 also has a little less glitz on the labels and lettering, which will have its appeal too.
