been wanting one of these. was wondering is this scope a bit too much for the average hunter? mostly whitetail. an occasional trip out west, etc. i know its fairly bulky and heavy. found somewhat if a deal on one and am considering it.

closest would be 50 yds or so. average shots have been usually 130-250 yds.   i know i dont need 16x for that but its a pretty good deal i found on the scope and i figure if i go hunt out west some it may come in handy.

You don't need tons of magnification to hunt out west. I have never hunted with a scope over 10x and never had the need for more. Get a scope that will do what you need where you will hunt the most. Don't buy a scope based on a possible scenario you may someday do.

IMO even out west the low end plays a bigger role than top end. My elk hunting scope is a 1.7-10x and it is on 3x or below 95% of the time.

But that being said some of the nicer scopes have a nice low end with a pretty high top end these days. But most of them are pretty large

If you are OK with an overall size of the scope, the magnification range should not be too much of  a problem.  4x seems to perfectly sufficient for most things and you can dial up for target shooting or longer range shots.

4x can be a bit much for shots as close as 50 yds.  I would want to set up a test with that scope and a life-size target to see what it looks like... it might very well be fine... but I'd want to know before making that purchase!

Too bad that deal didn't work out for you.  If you get one, you won't have any regrets - it's a great scope.  Very easy on old eyes.  I just put one on a new 17hmr for gopher plinking.  I think it fits nice and it's not too heavy and bulky for what I want.  I don't think I'd put it on my elk rifle though.  For me, 4x is just fine for close range.  The shortest parallax adjustment is 50m but it's still not too bad inside of that for just about any size target.

Big turret housing makes for limited adjustment using standard bases and rings.

I really like this rifle/scope combination.

Thanks, I'm new to the 17hmr round and really liking it.  I was afraid that the scope would be way overkill for a pea shooter but then nailing a gopher at 150-200 yds takes the full 16x for me off bags.

Yes, just the basic 20.  A Z-plex might've been kind of cool but I'm happy with just a plain Jane reticle.  Also, as I zeroed it, I found the BDC (and windage) adjustments to be pretty much right on the stated 1mm per click at 100m.
