I dropped a pair of Conquest binoculars and scratched the eyepiece ocular.  Zeiss has had them since June 07 - they had to go to Germany for the repair - I'm still waiting.  It's going to cost $144.  I'll be more careful with my FL's.  Just thought I'd let people know.

I've heard that all too often about Zeiss, unfortunately.  One of the reasons I don't own any of their product.  If you don't want those problems, sell you FLs and go with Swarovski.  Best customer service in the business.

+1 fpr Swarovski customer service.  I have yet to see anyone beat them in that regard.  I would definately buy Swarovski again.  Take it from me I have tried about 8-10 pair of binoculars before I took the plunge.  Now that I have the best I don't need to worry about upgrading anymore unless Swarovski come up with something better.

Update.  Got a return call from Zeiss USA.  They've been told Zeiss is sending a brand new replacement pair of the same binoculars instead of making the repair.  Curious.  The charge of $144 still applies.  Suppose to be here any day now.  Still waiting.  The original delivery date to Zeiss USA, according to FedEx tracking info, was July 3, 2007.

This is pretty much the rule for anything under 1000, they will not bother to repair much. Very few things are worth the repair. We are OK with that, just send us a new pair for all problems all brands.

Tero,

The problem is the $144 charge for warranty coverage!

Birdwatcher, I have to say $144 for a new pair of binoculars that were dropped is a steal.  I was interested in this post because I have a pair of 10x40's that need repair and I would gladly give $150 to get a brand new pair after the use mine have seen. Zeiss may not be quick it seems, but they are fair.

BobH,

It all depends upon an individuals expectations.

If I'm not mistaken Vortex has been replacing binoculars free of charge.
You can read about their warranty service on page 4 of the post below:

Nikon offers a standard 25 year binocular "no-fault" warranty, which includes replacement even if it's the customers fault, for just $10.oo.

Pentax offers a similar "worry free" warranty and the replacement cost is only $19.95.

Perhaps others will chime in and let us know how binocular warranties are handled by Swarovski and Leica, etc. etc.

Hello, I own a Kowa 8x32 it has a unconditional  limited lifetime warranty that covers all the parts of the binocular in any defects I do not know if that applies to dropping it ?  the optics are bright and clear and very well made , I have never had a problem with these binoculars in any way.

Got a brand new pair of 10x40 Conquest today by UPS.  I was very clear to Zeiss that I had dropped the binoculars and scratched one eyepiece.  These binoculars were about 2 years old.  It took awhile but I'm satisfied.

That's what counts in the end.  They took a while on my Conquest too, but didn't charge me anything.  I was satisfied too.  Too bad they live in Europe. Wink
