I just purchased/mounted a Zeiss Conquest 4.5-14x50 w/Rapid-Z 1000 for my Savage 10BA LE .308 and I’m confused about the initial short yardage zeroing process (even after reading all of the Zeiss instruction materials).

When zeroing my Rapid-Z 1000 @ 200 yards (or in my case 1.35” high @ 100 yards) the instructions indicate that I use the center cross hair (or the 500 yard bar). My question is: When zeroing my scope on the center cross hair (1.35” high @ 100yds) - is zeroing done with the scope magnification ring set at the “optimized power” (13.46 in my case) as determined by the Rapid-Z Calculator?

I initially assumed that I would use the # 1 Bar and simply sight 1.35” high, but that’s not what the Zeiss instructions indicate.

I have one of the 6.5-20s on a target 223, love it.  Mine is sighted in so that my dead center is good at 100yds, that said I have target turrets and normally dial in corrections.  I did however use the holdever to test it when I first got it, sighted in at the 100 yard top mark at 100 and then used the holdover on the power zeiss said to test it every 100yds out to 500 which it worked.  Like I said, I know have it sighted in at 1000 yds dead center and dial in corrections so I dont' have to use the specific power.

Thank you SVT! That was very helpful information and at least gets me in the "ballpark" with the BDC range bars. I have the tactical turrets as well, so I should be good to go! Thanks again...

You'll also need to check your elevation range and see what range you get out of yours, mine was bottomed out when i used the 100 yd bar, just FYI

Yeah, I'm already anticipating being bottomed-out (or really close to it) at 100.

BTW - My Son is shopping "right now" for a good bolt action .223 - with a laminated thumbhole stock! What make/model do you have?

Nice! Unless you object, I'm going to forward the photo of your rig to him. I know he was going to check out Savage first (at my suggestion) but he'll be drooling once he gets a look at your set-up! Thanks...

the power ring is set to the max. power on initial sight in. -- because your sighting in for 100 yds, not 500, the optimization then corrects this set in by raising the poi slightly with the reduced power setting. I use the 1000z on a 6x24 diavari. The drop on a 308 will be about 11.6 inch at 500 or about 3 mil on my scope/gun/loads. Once you catch on -- you can leave the scope at 0 and use dial in for calculated drops or I simply dial to 3mils on my scope which "activates" the hold over reticle.
