Does anyone know what type of plastic is used in the Zeiss bino housings?  Also, how does the impact and tensile strength of their plastic housings compare to aluminium?  What other industries use similar plastics, and what other products use this plastic?

My guess is polycarbonate-sold in the US as Lexan and Makralon. Canon uses it in it's camera and lens bodys (I suspect Zeiss does also) Older lenses styles made of brass and ball bearings are still made. Less quality aspherical camera lenses are made of poly, and almost all disposable cameras. Stress relieved poly is almost unbreakable and far exceeds Al., further more the coef. of expansion is far lower and it does not make a good heat sink. Oakley uses it in their shooting glasses and so does the USAF as windshields in their jets. It has outstanding cutting and milling properties and over 5,000,000 jobs in Europe depend on it. In fact the DVD and CD industry could not exist without it's incredible physical properties. Most light sensitive sunglasses are made out of it as opposed to AgI impregnated glass formulas.
