Hi!

I am new to the forum and I very much appreciate the opportunity to post and ask a question.

I am also new to high end rifle scopes. I just purchased a Sako 30.06 AV rifle that has the Zeiss Diavari-Z 2.5-10x52mm T* scope.

I have been prowling around on this site and found some info about this scope. I believe it was purchased in the late 1980's when the gun was purchased (judging by the serial number).
  • Another OP asked about his similarly marked Zeiss scope, but it had the marking of ZA, not simply Z ... as mine is. Could someone describe the difference?
  • What is FFP reticle? A poster said this one has an FFP reticle.
  • Another poster said it has an etched reticle. What does that mean?
  • Is there a description somewhere of the focal plane and is this 2nd focal plane?
  • I have seen my scope posted on eBay for around $1,200. Is that an accurate, general value?
  • Finally, any general info about the scope would also be greatly appreciated. One poster said this scope is one of the best rifle scopes ever made (quite a claim, I know).

Many thanks.

Welcome to Optics Talk. I wish I could help you, but I'm sure one of The Hive can get you sorted out.

Sako rifles are sweet hearts.

The 2.5-10x52 Z model will have a rail style mount on the bottom of the scope. The plain Z model mounts like most any other scope made. The rail is pretty specific to certain European rifle mounting systems.

The scope was made between 1976-1990 and is one of the nicest hunting scopes Zeiss has made to date !
If it is FFP ( first focal plane ) then the reticle will appear larger or smaller in the scope as you increase or decrease magnification. With 2nd focal plane the reticle stays the same size no matter what magnification you are set on.

Etched reticle means the reticle is actually etched inside of the lens. This is much stronger as the other option is a wire reticle which is used typically on cheaper model scopes and can break over time and heavy recoil.

Honestly if they sell on Ebay for $1200.00 then that's what it will be close to. Internet sales are a good place to look for value on an older scope as a long as you have a few to compare.

PS: I work at Zeiss Sports Optics US and can help if you call in 1-800-441-3005 with the serial number for more specific details. I hope this helped.

Many thanks!!

Your dating of the scope seems to be consistent with the date of the rifle -- 1989.

It does have a long rail along the bottom. And the reticle appears to stay the same regardless of magnification.

I come from a video/film background so am familiar with the reputation of Zeiss ... when I saw this SAKO for sale with a Zeiss scope, I jumped on it.

I am now looking for an appropriate way to protect the glass, so if you have any suggestions in that area, I would certainly appreciate your opinion.

Best regards!
