I would save some money and get the 3-9X40.  It is a modern classic and well-suited to your uses.

See if you can find one with the 4a reticle.

Similar hunting situations--I have a 3/12 by 56 Conquest--30mm--I like it here in SC where legal light is 1 hour pre and post sun rise sun set.

However, both of those are very similar in terms of light transmission.  I would go with the better deal?!  The other variable to know is the field of view which is important for the woods conditions you mention.

there are also many discussions similar to your question on the optics talk.  Search those and you will get some great info.

Can't go wrong with any of these suggestions. Having owned and used all three in the woods, across fields and on powerlines in both good and poor light, I find the 44 Z-Con (though a little pricier than the 40) to be a good compromise when all these bases need to be covered with a single scope. On most rifles the 44 requires only medium mounts, not too high for comfortable shooting and weighs almost the same as the 40. +1 on the German #4 reticle. The heavy bars work well in low light and the fine cross will take you as far out as you want to shoot in good light.

The 3-9x40 is much more user friendly than the 3.5-10x44 IMO.

After printing out the spec. from ziess and comparing everything, I'm going to take the 4in eye relief on the 3x9x40.
