now this is a hypothetical challenge.

here you have two scopes

a zeiss conquest 3-9x vs a minox 2-10x so there close to the same overall.

now this is a price dependent deal-- lets say the minox is $120 less than the zeiss.

now i like the zeiss but is it really $120 better than a ZA5?

yea i been squishing cans to save up to a minox--LOL!

Here's Ilya Koshkin's comparison of the Conquest vs the ZA-3... not the ZA- 5. Ilya wrote this piece several years ago and I've not noticed any complaints in the forums about Minox or Meopta. The scopes were both new to market at the time and were recommended based on future durability.

this is sort of how i am 'leaning"

i think i'm going to get the ZA5 even though i found a very decent deal on the 3-9 conquest.

the ZA5 has two big things going for it.

the zeiss model i'm looking at is pretty much the standard zeiss 3-9x with #4 hunting. i'm pretty sure it is a great scope but is is more or less the "middle"  with the terra at the bottom and this is the next step up.

the ZA5 is the top of the line for minox and it is a $100 less.

both are good and would probably fit the bill but the ZA5 is a bit more "bang for $$"

an i on the ball or out to lunch here?--LOL!

A Zeiss Conquest is better than most other companies best scopes. Minox is a good scope though,

Have both the Conquest and ZA5.  Find them comparable.  Eye relief goes to the Minox...

You won't notice any difference optically between the two.  The Conquest has a great track record, the Minox .....the jury is still out as they are much newer to the market as to how they'll hold up.  Be glad you didn't wind up with a ZA3 though.

I have several Conquest scopes and 2 ZA5 1.5-8X32s. As with so many things, there are advantages and disadvantages to both.

ZA5 has the obvious zoom advantage, and they are shorter and lighter than Conquests of equivalent top end power. They are also less expensive. If you're mounting a scope on a super light mountain rifle or a trim little rimfire, I think the ZA5 1.5-8 is a very nice complement size- and weight-wise.

Conquest is backed by a company with a long history of building some of the best rifle scopes money can buy. The jury is still out on ZA5 durability, and mine are both mounted on rimfires, so they don't get any recoil punishment. I can say my ZA5s track just as perfectly as my Conquests.

I like the Conquest reticle selection better.

I think the ZA5's turrets & turret caps are too tall and obtrusive proportional to the size of the scope, but that's a minor, personal gripe.

Optically, the center field performance is pretty much equal to my eye in terms of resolution.

The ZA5 (or at least the 1.5-8X32 version) has noticeable barrel distortion (a slight "fisheye lens" look) at the low end of the power range (up to about 4X), transitioning toward a relatively flat field beyond 5X. This is the tradeoff to combining a broad zoom range in a compact size / short focal length. This isn't such a big deal and isn't too noticeable until you look through the scope while panning. Conquest doesn't have as much distortion, and what distortion it has is pincushion.

I believe Ted was referring to "rolling ball" effect, as described in this thread.
