I Bought a new browning micro hunter 7mm-08. Looking for optics - considering the zeiss conquest 3x9x40 and the leupold VX or Vari-x III in 2.5x8x36. Any suggestions, I like them about the same - I was impressed that when i adjusted the variable power levels on the scopes, I didnt have to move my eyes to keep the same view or eye relief?? They are pretty close to the same price, with the Leupold being slightly less expensive. The Leupold is the same price in the 3x9x40 model as the zeiss. Any other models that would compare?

I have done this comparison with the Zeiss Conquest 3x9x40 vs. all the compareable Leupold Vari-x models. I found the Zeiss to be just slightly noticeably better in the shadows than the highest model Leupold VX  and it was night and day better than the lower model VX Leupolds.

IMO I would vote for the Conquest.

The Zeiss is the better scope, but it might be a little large for your petite rifle.  I would take a look at the Kahles 2-7x36.

I am somewhat concerned with the physical size and weight of the zeiss on the rifle. My gun comes in at aound 40" overall length and just over 6 pounds bare. I've always just bought 3-9x40 scopes in the past, but after looking at the 2.5x8x36 leupold VX III, I was impressed - of course - the local Cabelas wanted $500+ for it and the more for the zeiss.

I noticed this site has a deal on the leupolds with free stuff. Online comparison shopping with other sites may show lower prices, but these guys offered their 110% deal to me. In this case though, these guys are also offering free leupold shipping and free leupold "stuff", so the original price - in this case $399, turns out to the better deal with free rings and base, free shipping, and scope caps.

I have about $400 to spend here, I dont think the Kahles can be had for that amount - new. I'm very leery of spending $400 on a used scope unseen.

Are there any other suggestions in this price range and quality?

As ranburr, the Conquest hands down. If you think that there was a hands down between the Leupold models, then you are going to be very pleased with the Conquest. In a recent article, by a well respected optics guru, John Barsness ( Rifle Magazine # 214/ June 2004), the Conquest was touted as an excellent scope for the money. It wouldn't be right if I didn't mention my favorite, the B&L/Bushnell 2.5-10x40 with the FireFly reticle and Rainguard water proof lens coatings. The B&L & Conquest are in the same price range and these scopes got very high praise in the Rifle Magazine article that made reference to.

P.S. Burris has a great reputation for building great scopes with excellant quality and excellant optics. Give them a try if you can and always follow the golden rule that you should spend as much on you gun as you do your optics!!!!!!
