    Posted: August/30/2012 at 19:11
I was cleaning a couple of my rifles a few minutes ago. Both of the above scopes were on the rifles, each in 3x9x40. Since it was getting pretty dark out, I decided to take both outside and look into the woods behind the house where it's really dark. I was shocked to find that the 4200 was MUCH brighter than the Zeiss. I was not only shocked but a little mad, I just paid $400.00 for the Zeiss and $ 159.00 last year for the 4200 new.

Most of my shots are at dusk, and I'm not paying $400.00 for that type of performance.

I heard somewhere that the Zeiss could be returned if under a year for a full refund, but the Zeiss website says nothing about it, Has anyone heard this?

If so it's going back tomorrow !!

Did you have them both on the same power when you were comparing them?

I can't say I'm all that surprised.  Most people think because it has Zeiss on it, it is automatically the best there is.  I've had or have the 4200, conquests, VX3......I can't tell any difference at duskwith any of these and I've one the comparison countless times.

Now if it is a Diavari, it may be the best there is.

I'd agree with you JG, having done similar comparisons with my own Conquests and 4200.
I do not agree with the OP that a 4200 is better than Conquest in low light resolution- they are too close to call.
As far as a Diavari... I'd have to give the nod to the Z6.

In the approximate price range as the Conquest and VX3,  Big Sky is better in low light, surprisingly.

Yes same power setting, I am just stating a fact. I was outside with both scopes, and the 4200 was brighter. I'm not a huge Bushnell fan, In fact this is the first scope other than the Zeiss and countless Leupold I've ever had. The only reason I bought it was the people on here like them and they were on sale for 159.00. I am very impressed with it.

As long as you like it and are satisfied, that's all that really matters.

Bushnell used to offer the 1 year return policy with the Elite 6500 scope!

as far as a Z6...I'd have to give the nod to the Premier's Wink

I'm not surprised either. Lots of people get all worked up just seeing the Zeiss name.

All the Elites have the 1 year deal and I think I've seen it advertised for those new Legends too.

I am kind of surprised. I had a Conquest 3-9X40 that was really bright in low light, to my eye. Not a fact, just my opinion. I never had the light transmission measurably tested against any other scope.   I also really liked the eye relief.

To each their own.

My own eyes have always seemed to "see" a brighter picture through the Elite scopes. This is just MY thoughts of course, and perfectly unscientific.

My biggest problem with the 3-9 4200 has been the reticle in low light conditions. The glass is good enough at last light. But trying to pick up an animal in cover in that light is very hard with Bushnell's iteration of the plex. It is certainly a very good scope for the money, though.
I can say the same of the old 3-9 Monarch of UCC vintage. Fine glass, but the reticle leaves me wanting a better scope.

Somehow I missed the close out deal on the 4200 but they are great scope especially with the rainguard coating.  I am not familiar with the Zeiss return policy but suggest you call SWFA and inquire. I doubt you will be able to acquire another 4200 at that discounted price but their Elite line has the same scopes for the most part. The one I liked was the 4-16x40 which for the last year had side focus and that is no longer shown where the more expensive 2.5-16 is available.  What you get with a particular brand of scope is not always easily seen as some of the value is in the long term customer service and even if you keep your zeiss you should take some comfort in the fact that it has a very solid warranty.  I just bought a Zeiss 3-9 and I like it just fine and wouldnt mind having another one so we dont all agree on what constitutes quality.

i compared them side by side a few years ago, and i really couldnt see much difference, i did like the thicker reticle on the zeiss though, it did stand out better imo. i like zeiss's eye relief better than my 4200's as well. i cant comment on the durability of the zeiss having never hunted with one, i can however say that the 4200 is tough enough to handle my .300wby and my .375H&H just fine.

You just mentioned about the only thing I didn't like about the 4200. One shooter in my family has a tendency to crawl the stock on that 4200's rifle and the eye relief was a tad short for him, although plenty for most people. He still only has 2 eyebrows, but did get whacked a couple of times. I have less tolerance for bleeding about the face, so learned that lesson, early.
