I'm a newbie here, so hello all.  Firstly I do want to say that you have a great forum here with excellent information.

I've been trying to decide on a scope for a 30-06 that I purchased recently.  After reading alot of info on here and checking out several in local shops, I think I've finally settled on the Zeiss Conquest series.  However, I'm having trouble deciding on the exact model.  I'm looking at either the 3-9x40 or the 3.5-10x44.  I found that I can get the latter for $25 more than the first.

I understand the eye relief is 4" for the 3-9 and 3.5" for the 3.5-10.  What is more important in your opinion - the longer eye relief or the extra 4 mm of objective...especially when considering there is only a slight price difference?

Also looking for opinions on reticle pattern.  I'm intrigued by the mildot reticle.  Would that be good for hunting or should I stick to a more standard plex reticle?  It will be used both in woods and open country hunting.....dawn to dusk.  Any thoughts would be appreciated.

The question you should be asking is, what is the differance between the fields of view, which is the other part of the equation?

Welcome to our forum!!.Yippee............Zeiss is certainly an excellent choice for your 30-06. Either one of your variable choices above would do the job very well. Neither one, as far as magnification is concerned, will have a real big or clear advantage over the other, because the difference in magnification between the two on the low or high end is minimal........As far as eye relief is concerned? 3.5" vs. 4" for your 30-06 shouldn`t make any difference. You are not shooting a heavier kicker like a 300 or 338 mag. If you do have a problem with 3.5" of eye relief and get scope whacked with a 30-06, then the problem would be with you, your cheek position and not the scope. My scope with its 3.3" of eye relief, sits on a 300 WSM Ruger Frontier short barreled compact, which does exceed the ballistics of the 24" barrelled 30-06`s. It`s recoil is greater than your `06. I haven`t had a problem with eye relief!!................Personally, I am not a mildot or BDC reticle fan. I prefer simplicity with a plex reticle. On every hunt regardless of terrain, my zero is set at 300 yards. I know the velocity of my loads, the BC of my bullet and the bullet drop at distances downrange. A 300 yard zero eliminates alot of guesswork for shots out to 400 yards! All of your open country shots, for the most part, will be less than 400 yards. Based on proper knowledge of the reloads, simply aim higher if your rangefinder says 400 yards! Thus, I don`t need a more complicated reticle. The whole idea behind the mildot or the BDC reticles is to eliminate the guesswork in the first place. That is no substitute as opposed to knowing your loads, etc. However, some prefer those types of reticles..........Zeroed in at 300 yards, I have taken hogs out to 342 yards with my 3x9 4200, using a simple plex and my ARC rangefinder! My advice would be to pick either scope but stick with a simple plex reticle!!

I had the 3.5-10x Conquest on a .300 WM with no problems to report.
The ocular never got close to me.

The 3.5-10 has a very slight edge in FOV and is actually a smaller scope. I think that would be a very good choice considering the cost difference.

Your 30-06 is a long action I would go with the slightly longer scope, this will allow for better scope seating at your desired cheekweild, Of course there's always the extended rings as well. My opinion only. Also the #4 reticle would be excellent, as the zero at 250 yrds will allow fast shooting with minimal guess work.
Welcome to the OT.

I prefer the 3.5x10x44 myself due to the larger objective and shorter overall length. The reticle is a little different and as mentioned in another post I prefer that also. Resale would dictate that a scope worth $100+ more for only $25 more spent would also be a dollar wise move. However Cyborg brings up a very valid point.....check your scope mounting distance and look at the 3x9 with a longer tube if that will be a problem. I use all short actions so never think of that concern.
