Hey need a scope for my 30/06. I use this mostly for shorter range stuff - I would say 20 yards out to say 200 yards. Most shots would be 30 - 150 yards or so. I really want a wide field of view with enough magnification to make that occasional 150-200 yd shot. Most shooting will be "In the woods", tree lines, bottoms or fairly close set stands. I was really leaning towards the 3-9x50 for the slight extra field of view and ability to use at a little higher magnification in low light. Also not a huge weight size difference in the 3-9 vs say the 40mm. Reticle was looking at the Plex
But now I look at the 3.5-10x44 and I see:
  • FOV is not far off of the 3-9x50 and is better than the 3-9x40
  • Weight and size with of the 3.5-14x44mm is actually smaller than the 3-9x50 (but obviously not the 3-9x40)
  • I get the extra 1x magnification on the high end for the 150-200 yard pokes and I think 44mm will gather enough light

So to sum it up what do I do? Thoughts? I really appreciate the help...

Also FYI - I do have a Swarovski Z6 1.7-10x42 with BR reticle for sale. moderate ring marks but other than that rest of scope, caps and lenses are absolutely perfect. Have all paperwork including warranty card, but no box - want $1,300  - retail is approx $2,000 on this scope

Duke are you talking Diavari or Conquest? I own conquest in 3-9x40 & 3.5-10x50 My hunting is similar to yours & I prefer 3.5-10x50 in #4.Hope this helps.

Stickbow I am talking about the conquest. I see you are comparing to the 3.5-10x50. I use 50MM and even some larger from time to time, but on this one was looking again at the 44mm in this magnification or the 3-9x50. Lets assume I could get them at the same cost or not a meaningful price difference, what would make the most of my situation?

Why not put the Z6 on it?

I would probably prefer the 44mm just because you can mount it lower. I have used a buddys 3-9x50 Conquest and didn't notice any descernable difference in low light performance or anything else for that matter (compared to my 3.5-10x44 conquest). I do like mine being mounted lower though !

Think I am going with the 3.5-10x44. Talley says I can use up to a 44mm scope on the low rings (integrals). Anyone know if I could fit the 44MM with flip caps on the low heights??? Thanks folks you've been very helpful.

I usually sand a little off the bottom of the cap when using Talley's but it does get the job done.

50mm objectives get hung up on almost everything, stay with 44.   At your ranges, you won't need a larger objective for low light, the 44 will do just fine.

3-9x40 will be cheaper.

The 50mm isn't that big that's it's going to catch everything while hunting. I use one with a 2" sun shade where we hunt and don't have issues with the scope getting hung on chamise and manzanita while going through the brush. It would probably get hung up on the scrub oak but that stuff reaches out and grabs everything so I try to avoid the stuff when possible.
