I got to test drive the Zeiss Conquest 3-9x40 for a few days. This is a very nice scope. I mounted it on a marlin 30/30 just to play around with.

From what I found the scope is bright and clear. It has very good eye relief. The eye relief was tricky to my eyes. If you are centered to the scope it was great but if you was off center at all the edge to the opposite side would turn black. This would happen on all powers. I also noticed that the adjustment caps felt very fragile on this scope. I feel this is a very good buy. Here is a few pictures I snapped for you all to see.

i now have the conquest in my possesion, and for obvious reasons i havent got to play with it much, i took it out at dusk on my deck and compared it to the 4200 elite, clarity is excellent in both scopes i dont know that i could pick a clear winner there, in eye relief however the conquest shines, i really like the thick reticle in the conquest its nice and strong at 9x, may not be a good choice for varminting, but i cant see why it wouldnt work on a 300yd shot at a deer or elk. i too find the turret caps to look flimsy and they feel like that as well, could use a page from leupold or nikon on that part of the scope, the clicks are as positive as i have ever experienced, they turn with some effort which i like, you wont second guess whether or not you put in 12 clicks or 13 with this scope, its also audible as well as felt when you make an adjustment.  i like this scope, i dont know if i would pay $450 for it, but the reticles zeiss has makes that choice a little more difficult for me, i like all there reticles, bushnell obviously doesnt have the same options with the 4200, but the zeiss doesnt posses rainguard either. i would have to spend a fair amount of time in the field with both these scopes before i would give a clear winner, and even after month i may not find one they are very close in my eyes. im waiting for it to get a little darker so i can see what happens in lower light levels.

I was just about to purchase a Zeiss 3-9X40 and was glad to see these two reviews on the scope.  I was surprised to find out about the plastic cheap looking turret caps.  As others have stated, you would think a scope of this price would come with metal caps.  Does anybody know if a differnt brand of metal caps would fit the Zeiss?

Good reviews, Gentlemen. Thank you.

The turrets on the Conquest are indeed plastic, BUT for a 3-9x big game scope, how much are you really going to be cranking on them?
I can't recall anyone ever saying they broke them and even damaged them.
Mine on my 3.5-10x were cranked very little and the scope tracked accurately. Set it and forget it, I say.  Wink

If you were planning on getting the Conquest before, I personally wouldn't let plastic turrets and caps keep me from getting it. It's a great scope!

Yeah  Cheaptrickyou're right, but sometimes the dumbest littlest things appeal to me.  It shouldn't bother me.  I'll suck it up and try not to pay any attention to it.

I just think that the plastic turrets and caps while not ideal, are not a deal breaker. Wasn't for me any way.
Zeiss Conquest is fairly well regarded on this and many other forums, in spite of the turrets. Big%20Smile

I just purchased one of these. I have not even fired a shot with it yet so I will head out to the back 40 this afternoon to site in the browning with this scope. Looking at the turrets it doesn't seem to be marked left-right-up-down like most scopes or maybe I just have to look a little harder. Mine just has an arrow followed by a "UR". Maybe that is supposed to mean up & right but both turrets are marked the same. It is not going to hard to figure out but it does seem odd.

Yeah, they just put the same knobs on windage and elevation. If its the top knob it means (UP) and of course the opposite direction is (DOWN). If its the side knob for windage it means (RIGHT). I wish the knobs were marked better too. If you notice the increment marks dont go all the way around the dial either and they arent marked every 1/4" except with a bolder mark. But I do like how positive the clicks are. Yet I believe the more I look at my 4200 firefly I am beginning to like it more and more. The clicks are just as good. The reticle isnt etched but it sure does stand out and it stays black. It is a little too thick but it doesnt turn silver like the duplex reticle does in this scope. Also, for some odd reason I just like the shorter eye relief on the Elite a little better. It feels more comfortable to me. The conquest is a tad more finicky about head position and with the 4 inch eye relief my eye is a tiny bit distracted by the rim of the eyepiece and view around the scope. I started to sell my Conquest then changed my mind but am again considering it. If I had a hard kicker I would definately keep it but I believe the firefly 4200 may be what I use this year.
