That is quite a story...first I'd heard of it. The outcome was a lot better than what happened to the 39-year-old hunter on the MT-ID line that got killed by a grizzly trying to distract it from his hunting partner. They thought they had shot a black bear and went in after it. Some poor decisions, but still tragic. The notable thing that sticks out in every bear mauling/killing story I've read in the last 3-4 years is that nobody was carrying bear spray, except one guy who was on a mountain bike. He got caught in his pedals and had to spray the bear while lying down, but survived. I'll bet he had to throw out his shorts afterwards though!

Here's another one. Recently a search party was sent out to see if they could recover the remains of a hiker who went missing last year in the Bob Marshall Wilderness. They knew it would not be a rescue mission. Yet that's what it turned into. They encountered a young diabetic man whose insulin pump had broken. To make matters worse, we had a cold front move through last week and in that area it brought a nasty snow storm. They couldn't get a helicopter in but were able to stabilize him and keep everybody sheltered through the night: http://helenair.com/news/local/govt-and-politics/county-rescue-unit-saves-diabetic-in-bob-marshall/article_42f36954-e418-11e0-909d-001cc4c03286.html

Its kind of crazy at how many bear attacks (killings) that have happen this year in and around the Id/Mt area. I think its something like 3 or 4 this years to me seems like a lot than it has been.

That is a sad story on the MT-ID line.  Thundey and I were talking about it on my mule deer thread.  Thundey knew one of the guys and hinted there was more to the story.  I guess so:

Really a sad story.  Goes to show you gotta know what you're shooting at.  And you gotta be careful when shooting at a bear attacking someone.  It was either last year or the year before that that a guy shot his hunting buddy in the arm close to yellowstone whiloe trying to save him from a griz.
