So today I take my new Savage12 fv 204 to the range.I got it with in a dime at 100 yards factory ammo.I have a Simmons 8-32x44.(crap) the guy IM with has 2 Leos and a Zies .I shot his 223 with the Zies and all I have to say is WOW.That scope is so clear at full crank ,mine is like looking through a piece of plexiglass. His you could read a book at 100yards.I guess you get what you pay for.So now I guess I have to get a better scope. Its always something.

Nah...

I own some glass that is more than whole rifles combined with their kit. It all comes down to what your doing and how much you care. If you enjoy the sport of shooting and happy with what you have ...it is all good.

I used to buy expensive rifles and cheap glass. Now I buy less expensive guns and superb glass. In highpower cartridges and the distance they can be capable of ,if you can't see it clearly, you will probably miss it.Also if you're like me and keep gun purchases long term, you will find that your eye's age fast after 40 and you will be glad you purchased superb glass.

Read all the forums you can and you will find there are a lot of people who spent $100.00 to $175.00 for a scope and now wish they had put just a little more  money in their choice of glass.Buy as high quality of glass  as you can afford.Start at The sample list,as they have some awesome deals!

I have a Mossberg ATR 100 in .270 that has a Leupold VX-III scope on it that cost more than 2x what the rifle cost at wally-world.

It shoots slightly sub-MOA with Federal's Fusion 130 grain ammo at 100-300 yards.

Until the rifle costs >1k, I think it's wise to spend more on the glass than the gun.

Remember the ammo .... best ammo if you're that serious. You can have the best glass in the world but if the firearm is sub-accurate what good is a $1,000.00  -  $2,000.00 scope ? Maybe to count the freckles on your neighbor's wife when she sunbathes .... that's about all.  LOL   Yea a $150.00 rifle with a $2,000.00 scope ..... yea that makes sense .   ------

Or you can have the best firearm in the world, but if your scope can't hold zero, you'll never know if the gun can shoot well.

Or you may have the best firearm and the best scope, but if your mounts are crap, you'll never know if the gun can shoot well.

I suspect that the answer here is to avoid buying crap guns, crap scopes, and crap mounts.  There are enough good products at wideranging price points.  There is really no reason to buy a substandard product in today's marketplace.

I think the key is to figure out exactly what you are intending to do with the rifle.  If your hunting in a place where you have long shots, and are taking them at low light times, then I think you should spend the money on a scope that will enable you to make a good clean kill.  If your wanting accuracy you also need to start dabbling in reloading.  Factory loads are great, but when you start tweeking powder, and bullet weights all of the sudden that inch and a half groups gets smaller.  If the only time you bring out the rifle is during deer season, then don't waist your money.  Just find something that works for your needs, and your wallet, and go with it.
