From NSSF

The 2004 Outdoor Recreation Participation Study of the United States indentifies women among four key outdoor related markets with the highest potential for growth in the next two years. According to the study, conducted by Leisure Trend Group of Boulder Colorado, women are also the fastest-growing component of the shooting sports and  hunting industries. One factor reportedly responsible for this growth is an emphasis on the physical and emotional benefits of spending time outdoors. Currenty, more than two million women hunt in the United States every year and four million women target shoot...

Please don't take this wrong-it's just an observation-I hope the best for hunting and the shooting sports.BUT just the other day a woman told me she wanted to "take up hunting". The phrasing alone set me thinking- is that like taking up knitting (nothing against it alot of men do it) or "taking up golf" something to do between two points in time of more important appointments? Will these future female hunters save all year with one obsession-making the draw of an out of state elk hunt? Or putting off some trip advertised on TV knowing you will be eating dust for hours on some back road that would rip the bottom off your neighbors Lexus? Will little daughter grow up with a pellet gun in her hands and be taught the fundamentals of defensive shooting before the age of 14 or  learn it in dance school? (hopefully both). Does this mean my old FN mauser is going to be chicified like the current Jeeps and I will not be able to buy what I want in the market place because the female sector has such a powerful marketing factor (will that be heated leather seats sir?) ? Well if that is the case I hope the female sector is willing to also take on the burden of passing on the stories, the heritage, the color, and the sacrifices (new hiking boots instead of heels).

funny you should post that stephani, My wife out of the blue asked me to teach her out to shoot the M9 (berretta 92).As you can imagine i was a little taken back but hey, if its something that we can do togegher all the better. Plus if women take up intrest in these things then explaining why you spent $500 on a new gun will be a little easier, heck they may have to start explaining WHY THEY spent $500 on a new gun. Better guns then shoes.

That's what I'm talking about! If my wife wants to go with me out on a hunt or on the range I'm all for it. Gives me another reason to buy another rifle.

That's great! I see no reason why you should not teach your wife or girlfriend the sport that most men love. Not only for hunting but for protection.

since my wife is looking at another deployment next year it is very important she learn to use her weapon with the utmost effectiveness. This should go for all ladys who have firearms in their houshold. you never know.

My shooting experiences with my wife have been a building block progression.  She told me she had trouble seeing the sights as a kid (when her bros. tried to teach her how to shoot) yet she has 20/20 vision.  I suspected and confirmed that she is left eye dominant/right handed.   After trying several pistols (down to my Glock 9mm which "kicked too hard" I switched to rifles starting with my Varmint AR (13 pounds) off a bench....also which "kicked too hard."  I finally was able to build some confidence with my HB 10/22 off a bench and bipod.  Next I will try my Single-Six.  The fact that she showed interest at all is encouraging....I have a new Browning .22 long rifle semi-clone that I will mount a really old 4x32 scope (parallax corrected to 50yds) which will be hers.  My point is to exploit any level of interest for the reasons stated above and most of all be patient.
