I've always been interested in the Winchester 71, do any of you have any thoughts or comments regarding this rifle?  I'm considering purchasing a savage 99, winchester 88, or the 71 for no purpose other than that I find them interesting.

I still have nightmares about a beautiful vintage Model 71 in .348 Winchester that I passed up at a local gun show years ago.

$600 and I didn't have that much with me.    Really Sad

The 1886 Winchester in 45-70 would be about as nice and a lot easier to find ammo for.
The 88 isn't in the same class as far as nostalgia, history, etc. (Too modern for my tastes.)
Some of the big Marlins are awful nice too.

I've always wanted to get an expert gunsmith's opinion on which should be more reliable- an 86 /71 Winchester or a Marlin 1895...

The 71 is my favorite lever gun.  A pre 64 in good condition is a thing of beauty.

Saw one just the other day. [ Model 71--....and some Browning-Winchester 1886s ]. I was looking at everything real fast....I only had fifteen minutes to look at THE WHOLE STORE!!  I can't remember if I memorized the price.  I want to say $1500....but I have gone blank on trying to recall that particular hang tag in my mind....

I have a Savage 99 (LOVE IT) I want an 88 in the .358 configuration or if I can find a rusted abused one maybe have it turned into a .338 Federal would be neat.

The Winchester mod 71 is an amazing gun.  I have a buddy that lets me shoot and drool over his.  It has the slickest lever action I have ever felt and that includes levers that have been "worked over".  It is known for being one of wWinchesters smoothest actions and I couldnt agree more.

.348 cartridge is great at its proper distances.  Reminds me of a necked down .45/70 but its not, actually the base of the .348 is slightly bigger.  Has plenty of smack down for just about anything walking in the lower 48 with no problem.

I could never butcher one that was in good condition but to have one made in .500 Alaskan would be awsome.
