Beware the Winchester Ballistic tip for any 30 caliber rifle. A friend and I decided to try out the winchester ballistic tip, he was shooting a savage taticle 308 with a simmons atec, I was shooting a ruger 300 win mag with a leupold vx III on it. Shooting off a solid bench, at a solid target, we were both getting 3 inch plus groups at 100 yards out of both rifles. Needless to say, we weren't happy. Started 2nd guessing our guns, scopes, mounts, shooting ability, ect.

Apon inspection of the ammunition, it was discovered that the copper jacketing on the bullet had been peeled back by the shell casing on both the 308 and 300 win mag ammo. So we took the ammo back and showed it to the guy at the sporting goods store where we bought it from and he promptly refunded our money. We both tried some different brands of ammo at the range with the same guns, rest, targets with outstanding results. He was shooting a 160 grain extended range round in his 308, it was either remington or federal, I was shooting some 180 grain lead tip hornady custom loads. His 5 shot groups could be covered with a nickle at a 100 yards, my 5 shot groups were about the size of a quarter at 100 yards. We even switched guns and shot each others bullet holes.  After that, we were some happy campers to say the least. I emailed winchester about the problem we had with the ammo, and told them I would never put another round of winchester anything through any of my guns, and what did they do? They sent me a letter in the mail saying they were sorry for any problems I had with the ammo, and gave me a 5 dollar coupon for the future purchase of winchester ammo. I gave the coupon away, and I warned all my buddies. The kicker is that just for curiosity, I have looked at that same brand of ammo on the shelves at other hunting stores since then and they still haven't corrected the problem. Beware!!!

Welcome to the OT, NCHunter!!

What part of NC do you live??

Thanks for the write up on the Winchester ammo. Kinda scary.

I reload for the most part, but I do buy Winchester "White Box" 5.56mm ammo for my AR from to time and have to say I like it. Q3131 I believe it is.

I also use Winchester 9mm ammo a lot in my Glock.

I have never had any problems of any kind with Win ammo.

Regards, cheaptrick

Thanks for the welcome Cheaptrick, I live in a small town named Burgaw, it's about 35 minutes from Wilmington on the coastal side of NC. As for the winchester ammo, the Ballistic tip ammo in the .308 diameter is the only ammo that I have had any problems with from winchester. I use to have a 7mm rem mag that I shot the winchester ballistic tip in with great results. When we went through the different calibers of ammo at the sporting goods store, it was only the .308 diameter ballistic tip loads by winchester that had this problem. The response I got from winchester was that they were going to look into it. Here it is a few years later, and I see they haven't fixed the problem. I just wanted to put it out there in case anyone was shooting that brand of ammo, in the 308 diameter, and was having grouping issues.

Good Shooting

Cheaptrick, that white box WInchester ammo that you shoot is distributed by Winchester, but is made by Israeli Military Industries, to the best of my knowledge.  It is pretty good stuff, especially for the money.

There's Q3131 and Q3131A. Pretty good 5.56mm ammo.

I don't remember now which one is which, but your right, one of the 2, or maybe both are Israeli made.

I've been shooting a lot of XM193 lately, and just picked up a box of 500 rounds of American Eagle .223 that I plan on putting a hell of a dent in today at the range.....

Some of the best factory ammunition I ever shot in 30 cal is the Winchester ballistic Silvertip nickle case stuff.  Pricey, but man is it accurate.
