I am looking for a tactical scope that will work on my AR-10, 7.62X51 Carbine 16inch barrel.
I want to use it for LE training, target shooting and if need be hunting small pests (coyote, wild dogs, etc..)
I only plan on reaching out to 100 - 300 yards...
I was wanting to purchase the...
but I was told it may not work well on my rifle up to or past 300 yards so my second choice is the...
any other opinions or sugestion would be greatly appreciated.
I'm trying to stay in the $400.00 range

A 6x42 fixed power is a really bright scope in low light the power is low enough to hand hold without a rest and its low enough to get onto a target under 100 yds but still enough to hit accuratelly at several hundred yards.
Also within your price range is going with one of the Aimpoint red dot scopes that mounts in 30mm rings like this; and its is a sweet little scope for low light and fast action I just ordered another one for myself:
Aimpoint 9000L 30mm Red Dot Sight 2 MOA Dot Aimpoint 9000L 30mm Red Dot Sight
Stock # - AIM11419

  • 2 MOA Dot
  • 30mm

There are a couple of used models of Super Sniper scopes on samplelist that are really nice scopes too.

Welcome

The 6x SS would be hard to beat, but if you have your heart set on a variable, this one is surprisingly good for the price. I like dot sights for Hogs and other pests.

I have the Eclipse line model and the Endurance line one. The eclipse isn't bad, but the Endurance is noticeably brighter and clearer.

I appreciate all of the expert advice, thank you,

I actually own two of the SWFA SS 6x42 Tactical Riflescope one is on my AR-10, 22” barreled rifle and the other one is extra I tried it on my AR-10 Carbine but it is a little too bulky for my Purpose, training fire and Maneuvering, prone target up to 300yds..etc..

What about the

Hawke 4.5-14x38 Sidewinder Tactical 30mm Riflescope

Or

Nikon 2-8x32 M223 Riflescope – -I know it’s geared for 223 but I have read it can be changed for 6.8 not sure about 308.

I also plan on mounting a fast fire at a 45 degree angle for less than 50 yard shots.

Ilya has been playing with a Hawke Sidewinder and so far so good there. "I don't have one and have never looked through one, so no help here"

I looked at that Nikon for my AR57, but went with a Millet instead.

http://swfa.com/Millett-1-4x24-DMS-Tactical-30mm-Riflescope-P9251.aspx

For all I plan to do with the 5.7 x 28 round 1-4 seemed like enough. With a .308 I can see you needing more top end than a 4. That Nikon might just be the ticket.

I think I may go with the  Leupold 2-7x33 VX-R 30mm Riflescope, seems to be a well made mid range scope not to cumbersome for my purpose and I can get it at $400.00, later on I'll throw a fast fire on it and I can cover short and long.

any opinions?

Honestly what I use for the job you are talking about are compact ACOG's and Aimpoints

My first choice is the 1.5x amber triangle but amber will wash out when pointed toward a street light at night more than red will.

There is a lot of difference in the amount of eye relief in this line of scopes. They also make a 2x

Yeah, those are sweet.  A lot of coin though.  I think I'd probably like the triangle better than the dot.

I really prefer the triangle.  I have the 3x red crosshair as well as the 1.5x amber triangle and the amber triangle in 1.5 is by far my favorite of all scopes its fast and deadly and working off the point of the triangle I am sub moa at 300 yds whats not to like.

I don't think I could do sub moa at 300 yards if I tossed a virgin in a volcano, then danced naked around my rifle burning incense. Shocked  I'm glad there are folks out there that can. I just know I am not one of em.

Later down the road I'll have me one of the acogs, they look really nice.

Yes the ACOGs are nice but I have to buy on a budget...
My family comes first then my shooting and $400.00 on glass is the most I can afford for now with out feeling guilty or getting in to trouble.

My choice for this application is the SWFA 3-9X42 with FFP and mildot combined with .1 mil adjustments. I own two, one on a LMT MWS and the other on a M1A NM. The second photo show targets using the LMT. Yellow steel is 500 yards, white steel 300 yards rapid fire and the paper is 100 yards. Bottom photo is the M1A at 500 yards. It cost a bit more but has great glass and is very rugged.
