Just out of curioisty, has anyone ever mentioned, requested, or heard word of SWFA building a red dot sight.  I know they build scopes with true 1x, but alot of people still prefer red dot sights. Obvisouly Aimpoint, Eotech are the players, and Trijicon to some degree of red dot type sights. If there is any company capable of putting out a top notch product that would make people scratch there brains even harder on which sight to get, I think SWFA could do that.

As you noted above, SWFA has their true 1-4 and the new 1-6 coming out shortly.

It would seem to me that they've done what you wish for with the added bonus of magnification when you need it.

I have an Eotech 512 red dot which sees some use on my AR from time to time.  Had it out a couple weeks ago ringing steel out to 300 yds...... Beyond that the targets were just getting too small for my eyes to see.

I also have the SWFA 1-6 on pre-order.  Once that arrives, the Eotech will most likely be sold or gather dust in my safe.  Having true 1X when needed with the added bonus of being able to go up to 6X is the best of both worlds IMHO.  Instead of having a red dot, and a scope, now it will be all in one.  That's a true win/win for the consumer.

Stork,

If you could build one, what would you like it to have?

What key features are you looking for?

Are you wanting a reflex sight?

integrated mount (co witness or 1/3 witness options)
windage and elevation adjustments low on the sight, maybe the base, to reduce clutter and obstructions . similar to eotech style
minimum 1 year battery life using AA battery.
knob adjust for brightness setting (prefer low left side, since most shooters are right handed)
2 moa dot single dot or eotech style large ring and 1 moa dot
large objective like srs or thin like eotech to reduce tunneling.
SWFA tough

I'd like to see a red dot more like a c-more, but closed (not a reflex):

  • Enclosed tube design (like an Aimpoint M4, not an open reflex micro-red dot)
  • Large window (30mm or bigger) with a short tube.  Consider a larger rear window than the front ala the SRS for an even greater sense of openness.
  • Extremely minimal tube with nothing sticking out on the sides or top. (this is the primary goal).
  • tiny, or creatively mounted elevation and windage adjustments.   Maybe fold them into the mount instead of the dot-in-the-tube? IDK.  Adjust with a coin or screwdriver, not a dial to keep it as small as possible.  Or do an A2(irons)-style elevation with only an optical windage in an out-of-the-way location?
  • Brightness adjustment should not be on the tube, but perhaps on the rail in front of it or below the dot on the front of the mount?  Buttons would be better than a dial if a dial can't be squeezed into an innovative location. Consider a remote brightness dial/battery assembly?
  • good (non-QD) lightweight mount included for a price near $300.
  • <12oz weight (mount included).  7oz would be quite good.
I want my sight picture to be glass and sky, with as little black stuff as possible on the left/right/top of the dot.

Oh and battery compartment (AA or CR123?) built into the mount (instead of tacked onto the sides/top) would be pretty trick.

Why do you prefer buttons over a dial for bightness adjustment?

I prefer the dial since the button style, you have to be. like 1,  2 , , 3 4,  to get your setting correct. it takes seconds, even if you know about what your brightness should be set at for the lighting condition. With a  dial,  turn, done. maybe plus or minus 1 to fine tune it, but generally i find the dial to be quicker. I know i said that i would like the top and sides to be clean, but I would still rather have a dial on the side or top over buttons anywhere. thats my preference though

Dials are great, I would just take buttons if they get the controls out of view.  Dials are huge, and sight picture is more important to me.
