Thinkin' about putting a Swaro Z3  3-9X36 on a Marlin 1895gs guide gun in 45-70. Will it hold up?

i have a weaver classic on my 45-70 and it holds up to 430gr HC handloads. so a swaro should hold up fine.

Sounds like a nice choice but personally I would put a 6x42 FX3 Leupold on it as I believe that fixed powers will take more of a beating than any variable.  I had a 6x42 FX3 with heavy duplex that was quite nice at 200 yds but the rifle was a 300 WSM so I have upgraded to a 4.5-14 Conquest but I really liked the 6x42 and while it is a tad larger diameter 6mm  thats only like about a quarter of an inch so I dont think its a deal killer. If you get the one with the long range duplex then you will have some hold over points you just need to figure out what distances they represent.

I gotta disagree with a fixed 6x on a 45-70.  I ran a 4x on mine for a while, and wished I had less magnification.  Just my opinion, but in short range thick stuff where a 45-70 is typically used 4x was just to much.  I had a 3-9x for a while, it worked quite well.  My only dislike about a 3-9x is having it on 9x makes you feel like you can take longer shots, which is not always optimal with the 45-70.  That is why I traded to a 4x.  But didn't like that either.  In the future when I can afford another a SS 1-4x is going on mine.

I could see how that would be the case.  They do make that foward scout scope mount for that rifle and a scout in a  2.5x might be the ticket.  I've been wanting a Guide gun the one with the big loop and full length tube in stainless but have not found one yet.
