Where did you hear that?  Sounds like your average run of the mill interweb idio-babble or the crazy random crap you hear in a gun shop when they want to sell you what is in stock.
I'm just another internet blowhard with too much time on my hands for the past couple weeks so take my comments with a grain of salt

have a friend that travels quite a bit and visits many retailers told me this. he was interested in one for his own and was gathering info like we all do before we make a purchase. i'm in the same boat doing the same thing. i like to hear what the "masses" say about something rather than develope an opinion from one source.

I have heard a few internet rumors of 4.5-30x Elite 6500 scopes not holding zero and having to be sent back to Bushnell.  After some digging, it turned out that they all came from one to two guys who posted it under different names on every forum they could find.

I also know one reputable source who has a 2.5-16x42 that holds zero, but is subpar optically (he is also sending his scope back to Bushnell to be looked at).

All that having been said, Elite 6500 is a comparatively new design and it is possible that there are some bugs that need to be fixed.  Personally, I think that Elite 6500 is a pretty mature product at this point and I would not hesitate to buy one.

One more comment: I have not yet personally seen a single brick-and-mortar gun store where the sales people knew anything about scopes.  I know they exist somewhere, since I keep on reading about them.  Perhaps someday I will do a drive-across-America in search of a competent sporting optics sales guy (maybe I will just drive toward SWFA and see if there is anyone competent along the way).

You looking for a competent optics person, now that's funny. You see, I might consider myself competent until you came walking in. Suddenly I wouldn't feel so knowledgable.

Understand this. There are counterfeit everything out there. I have evry bit of faith is Bushnell that the scopes they make will do as advertised. They have been very succesful in selling and designing very decent optics for the price for a good long time.
Buy your optics from reputable retailers only!!!!!! That is the only way to help insure that you get the genuine article.
I'm not saying there won't be the occasional dud from time to time, there will be with all makers. The real question is at what percentage of units sold are the problems showing.
A few random posts here and there are of no concern when you are talking about hundreds of thousands of units in service. Then how amny are counterfeit? How many of the posters of the complaints will attest that they tried to get something at an unbelieveable price? How many will say that Bushnell won't honor the warranty? For what purpose they won't honor it?

Fact is this, you take a chance with any purchase that yours won't be the normal expected quality. It happens. You can rest assured that if you get it from a reputable dealer, and something isn't right, the Manufacturer will honor the warranty, as long as you are on the up and up, and haven't voided the warranty with faulty installation practices.

Either way, Bushnell is a good brand, solid and dependable. The 6500 is their new flagship. It wouldn't be if there was a problem.
If it's a 6500 that you want, be assured that, if you buy the real thing, the chances are very good that you will get a good one, and not a lemon.

I have had my 6500 for a year now and have no problems.  It is installed atop of a very low recoiling Remington 700 VLS .243 caliber rifle but so far it has performed flawlessly and I am very satisfied with it.

My 4.5-30x50md holds zero just fine. It always returns to 0 after clicking as well. Very nice scope for the money. The rifle it is on shoots in the .2-.3's. I doubt it would do that if it were not holding 0.
