Another post here got me thinking, do you think the 300 WSM will replace the 300 WM? I'm thinking the WSM's give you the essentially the same ballistics as the WM but in a smaller package. I believe that in the future the WSM might just win out, what do you rifle nuts think?

When given the opportunity to buy one or the other, I buy WM. Ammo for the WSMs is appreciably more than WM ammo. For a shooter, that is an important part.
I don't see the WSM displacing the WM. Not sure how the whole WSM and WSSM trend will shake out, but in my opinion, there are more choices now than need be.

No way. Won't ever happen. .300 Win Mag is way too popular and there are too many rifles chambered for it already. .300 Win Mag ammo sells too well.

WSM = limited success as a whole. .270 and .300WSM have been very successful commercially; the others haven't been.
WSSM = commercially doomed.

Wildcat and Commercial is the diff though. They will always be around for the reloaders, but beyond that WSSMs are pretty much done. Nobody chambers for them anymore.
I am sure liking my winchester 223 WSSM though. It is a fun little round. Cannot wait til I shoot out the barrel and can put a 1-7" twist 3 groove Lilja on it. |

I don't see the 300 wm going anywhere. And I still think the wm does better than the wsm in the heavier bullets above 180 grs.

It won't. There are to many rifles chambered for 300wm, the cartridge works, and people are not going to scrap dies, brass and rifles just to change. The 300wsm is a great round, but other than being able to be used in a short action, it does nothing the 300wm isn't already doing.

Not sufficient enough volume to keep factory ammo on shelves. The handwriting is already on the wall. Nobody is chambering them in off the shelf factory rifles anymore.
We're talking commercial success, with factory ammo available and factory rifles so chambered here. To gun nuts like us who handload, lack of factory ammo doesn't matter.

The WSM's might steal some of the volume in each caliber, but they will never replace the historical standards .
