Why would you purchase a 30mm Leupold over a 1 inch? Canyou guys help me on that? I like the 3-9 X 40 30mm that they have but I am afraid it will look odd on my new custom rifle with that thick tube.

I'm farily certain people go with the 30mm tube for shock resistence on large caliber guns.

Larger tube would be slightly stronger, rigid, and you would have more windage and elevation adjustment range. Thats why the majority of "sniper" scopes you see have 30mm tubes, due to the increase in vertical and horizontal adjusment range. Lenses and coatings determine the clarity and brightness of a scope.

I like the 30mm tube scopes and to me they look normal.  If you like the 1in tube look better then buy that, you should be ok either way.   The bigest factor is in how much adjustment the tube size allows, bigger tube more adjustment.

Confused.....It appears from the above links that the Leupold uses 1 inch glass in a 30mm tube for the internal lenses???? True?

I do not recommend the purchase of a leupold 30MM hunting scope, there is no optical advatage there

and the price is very high for what you get.

For the same money, what scope would you recommend for a classic English style rifle that was based off a Westley Richards from the the 1920s.  the attached rifle is similar to what I am having built. I am not interested in scopes over the 3-8 so lets limit this to 2-7, 2.5-8, 3-9, and fixed 6x scopes.

Leupold FX-III 6x42 would be a nice choice.

Sightron S2 6x42

Nikon Monarch 6x42

If you like 30mm tubes, IOR 6x42 is better optically than all of the above, but a little heavier.

30mm scopes and rings cost more than 1" models of equal quality.  Other than a tactical rifle, there is no advantage to a 30mm tube.
