I narrowed my purchase down to one of the Vortex Viper Scopes.  This will go on a big game rifle and I don't have a local dealer to view these  for a comparison.  I don't normally purchase optics with the 50mm objective lens but my current 40mm scope doesn't cut it during low light conditions.

Does anyone have any experience with these two models?  The 4-12x scope has my eye but I can't decide without looking.  I looked at the specs and they look similar in size and specs with one difference being a parallax adj on the 4-12x.

Thanks for the help!

Welcome to OT bolt.It sounds like you have already answered your own question!I own just one of the scopes in question but I do own othe scope lines that I have compared & all I can say is the less light the more the 50 power comes into it's own,but in normal daylight I see no difference. This is just my 2 cents,I hope it helped.

The 50 will do better at higher powers because of the exit pupil objective relationship. Yhe 40 will do just fine as long as you keep the power down to a useable setting. It is unlikely that you are going to need a power beyond say 6-8X in low light anyways. So a 40 mm Objective will still render a quite useable exit pupil. And if you keep it at a minimum power in low light you will have more exit pupil than you can take advantage of regardless of which one you choose.

Also, the scope you are using right now may be suffering from lens coating deterioration. This is a killer on lowlight use. Have you used any detergent for cleaning the lenses? Windex etc. will destroy coatings, and without them light gathering suffers.

I never used anything like that on the scope but I appreciate the suggestion about the coatings.
