I know this question has been asked alot, but I was wondering if I could ask for a little help. I definately want to buy a SS for a Savage I am putting together. It is now a .308 on a 12 action with a Bell & Carlson tactical stock, Farrell 0 MOA base and rings. I'll mostly be using for target from 100 to 400 yards. I would also like to try it out on some groundhogs at about the same range. Would I be better off with the 10x42 or the 16x42? I am hearing that the 10x does just about everything better but I'm worried about not having enough mag to see smaller targets.

Get the 10x - you'll thank me later.

Everything is better with the 10x.  Over scoping is the most common mistake people make when putting a scope on a rifle.  You will be much happier with the 10x.

My recommendation would be to buy the 20X Super Sniper scope.  I have a 20X  as well as a 10X Leupold Mark 4 M3 and a 8.5-25 Mark 4 Illuminated, and a Leupold VariXlll 4.5-14. That said I like each of them for different reasons. The 20X Super Sniper does not have the same quality of glass as the Leupolds but it is entirely acceptable quality and it is extremely rugged. These are all large scopes designed for tactical rifles. For your stated purpose long range target and prairiedogs the 20X would be a fine choice it will adjust from about 10 yards to infenity - try that with a Long Range Tactical Leupold. The 20X field of view is just over 6feet at 100 yards so a 6 ft tall man would fill the scope at 100 yards double your distance and your 6 ft man fills half the scope but you aren't getting it to shoot people so you do not need the wider field of view that lower power scopes offer. What you need is something that shows you where on the 100 yard paper target you hit and the 20X is outstanding for this, who needs a spotting scope.  If you were buying for a Police Tactical rifle the 4.5-14 x 50 Leupold is my top choice. If you had to change from targets (that shoot back) at 500 to 800 yds in combat the Leupold 10X M3 makes that fast and idiot proof and under fire, (you may not have the time to do the math), the M3 cam system does it for you. Now if you really want to reach out and touch something at truely long range there is the 8.5 to 25 Mark 4 and I have one, but I honestly - really really like my 20X Super Sniper and am considering buying a second one.  By the way I have bought three of these four tactical scopes right here at riflescopes.com  with no problems.

Thanks for your responses. I just sent through an order for a SS10x42. I'm going to try it out to see if I like it. I had a Weaver 6-24 on this gun when it was a .22-250 but I want to try the fixed power at longer ranges to see if I can get used to it. If I like this one I'll probably buy a 16x or 20x to try them as well. Mainly just wanted to get my hands on a Super Sniper as I've heard so many good things. Wish the sunshades weren't backordered though
