I have a 6.5 Grendel 24" Overwatch rifle that should arrive around mid to late November. I have been searching for an affordable scope (~$300) to strap on it. I plan on doing some target shooting and eventually some deer and varmint hunting.  I was originally considering the 20X, but that might be a little overkill for the hunting application. So I'm leaning towards the 10X. I plan on ordering in the near future with some of the butler creek flip covers. If anyone has any input, it would be great. I'm also looking for some good rings that will put the scope at a good height with the scout rail that I have on the rifle as well. Thanks

I would recommend the going with the 10X if you are going to do deer hunting with it. The larger exit pupil, wider field of view and better low light performance makes it a better 'all around' scope in my opinion.
Just my two cents.

+1 on graysteel's comments.

hunting w/ a 16x or 20x is going to limit you severely.

10X Should be all you need, 6.5 out to 500 yrds, is probably stretching the effective range (ethically speaking)

So if you can shoot open sights at 50 yrds. 10X @ 500 would be the same +/-

From what I gather, 500ft/lbs is enough to ethically kill a deer (correct me if I'm wrong), and shooting the Hornady 129 grain SST from the 24" barrel of the Grendel retains 528ft/lbs of energy at 750 yards and the Lapua 123 grain Scenar retains 533ft/lbs out to 900 yards (granted I would never try to shoot a deer at these distances), but as for a 'yote or something similar, I would once I was very comfortable with the rifle at those distances.  Thats the only reason I was considerinng the 20X, but for where I live now, those kind of shots are probably never going to happen.

I think I will go with the 10X for now. Does anyone suggest any rings for this application with the scout rail attached?

keep the input coming

I realize the chart doesn't show the ethical ranges for the rounds that's a different chart that I'm looking for as we speak.

Totally understood. If I want to do the long range big game hunting, I have my .300 Weatherby Magnum with the Leupold for that.

I wanted an AR-15 platform that would be good for precision shooting, mostly out to longer distances, with less recoil. I do think that the grendel is plenty for nuisance species out to 750 yards, maybe further under ideal conditions.

Even 10x is too much magnification for many hunting situations. Unless you hunt only undisturbed game in very open areas, I would reconsider my options if I were you.

When I eventually take the gun hunting, it will either be out west or on large farm land. I wouldn't consider taking it in the brush and beating it around, I paid too much for it
