Just traded my big game rifle for a Cooper Classic in 22-250AI. This will be my walking varminter. However I will target shoot frequently to develope loads. Which scope Burris black diamond either 4x16 0r 6x24x50MM (Love the side focus option) Ziess 6x20x50MM,or a leupold 30MM 4.5 x14.5 (there so expensive) I've been told out of all Zeiss has the best glass,Burris Black diamond best price, quality is on par with the Leupold. Leupold is the most compact and lightest Its just not comfortable with the price. Do I need a 50MM objective lense? Do they mount uncomfortably high on rifle?

I personally have liked the Zeiss the most from simply handling the three mentioned in stores. The zeiss has side focus as well and is probably a better built scope.

a 30 mm Leo in 40 mounts lower than a 25 mm in 40 because the tube uses up part of the ring height. ie. can use lower rings. a 50mm 30mm tube "fits" lower than a 25mm 50mm for the same reason. I have a 6.5X20 Leo Var3 with side focus and an older 25mm 6.5X20 with target knobs. While the new side focus is nice, the AO on the older scope works far better, in fact the AO is so quick it can be used for range estimation to 400 yds (contrary to most AO's which are rarely calibrated to the actual range on the ring). The side focus on the new var3's are not marked in yardage. Even with a 20% error in yardage estimation using this technique, this gives a depth (%of error)of 360 to 440 yds. which when dialed in results in POI=POA

Well that's interesting! Thanks for new things to consider. Ok so what about burris or leupold.I have a 4x16x44 Burris now and have no complaints other than the AO has resistance. Bright light picture. Also a B&L elite 4200 6x24x40 it also has a nice picture. I like a varity of brands of guns and optics. I've never owned a 30MM scope.
