Need help chooseing between schmit and bender zenith 3x12x50 and swarovski z6 2x12x50 for a 300 wby mag. I have heard reports of swaros not holding up to heavy recoil.

Honestly they are both very nice scopes but in spite of the fact that they have incredible glass there is more to picking the right scope than the glass.  I'm not sure if you are familiar with Kenton Ind. balistic calibrated turrets but here is the site http://www.kentonindustries.com/
Now unfortunately they dont make dials for Swarovski but they do make a dial for the Police marksman  II Target knobs used on certain S&B tactical scopes. For me those scopes are out of my price range but I think if you put a Leupold Mark 4 on it with the speed dial or long range style of Kenton knobs you would be far better off with game at distance. Both of my 300 WM have Leupold one a VXIII and the other a Mk 4. and both are 3.5-10 but the 4.5-14 would be a good choice also. You have to figure that if you are shooting the 300 WM you are looking for distance out past 300 yds and at those ranges not only does trajectory come into play but wind drift is a huge factor as is elevation temp angle etc. so in short just throwing money at the optic may not get you all the way there and using a laser rangefinder with a set of Kenton knobs might be a big help.

I agree with Ufriend, mostly, definitely on the Kenton BDCs - not on the recommendation for a Leupold.

The issues with Swaro and recoil are, if I am not mistaken (and if I am, I will be corrected shortly), it was not with the Z6 scopes.

If you are down to those 2 scopes, you will not be disappointed by either.  As Ufriend said it, there are other options you might want to consider.  Of the 2 you are looking at now, both are great.  I have used a few S&B but not owned, I do own Swaro and like them very much.
If you could tell us a bit more about the intended purpose of the rig, we could give better advice.  In a "pick one" situation, I'd be inclined to pick the Z6 but wouldn't mind the S&B - need more info to make a good assessment of what will work best.

The problem is that Kenton only makes dials for some not all scopes however the Zeiss with their target target knobs are available but the problem there is that the scopes are in higher power ranges - its a vicious circle. I wrote Chris and suggested something like a Bushnell 4200 with illuminated 4a if it could be set up with Kenton speed dials would be a perfect hunting scope for those 200 to 600 yd shots.

When you are talking Africa you might be better off with a 1.5-6 but if you are talking elk in colorado you need  more than 6x but if you get too high on the low end you may become dinner for something in Africa and I think an illuminated reticle for defense from night preditors would be very much in line - as one of my friends has a lioness that he shot when it came into their camp stalking them. There is a reason they use double rifles with open express sights - you're quick or your dead and nothing on the face of the earth gives a faster second shot in those calibers.

i would venture to say that you need LOW END magnification like was said - more so than high. a 1.5-6 or a 3-9 would be plenty. PLENTY for 300 yard shots or a little more.

i would choose a #4 type reticle for faster target aquisition.

still have to say zeiss is about the best for the money.

According to reports lsited here, S&B just had a fairly extensive price increase, with that said I'd lean toward the Swaro, very close in glass and the ability to go down to 2x which maybe important in heavy cover.

Wish I had those choices.  I have no real experience with any of them, but the Zeiss seems to get my nod based on what I have read on this forum.  What Wby. are you taking to Africa?  I am jealous.
