I am a newbie to this site and looking for some valid info

I have narrowed my choice down to the following 2 scopes. Nikon Monarch 4-16X42 mil-dot reticle (listed for $389) OR Burris Signature Select 4-16x44, Ballistic Plex reticle (listed for $449)
Pulled the prices from competitor.com if anyone is wondering.

Which ever one I purchase its going to make a home on a 300RUM.

I am looked for thoughts, pro vs cons..........etc

Both are good scopes and both have a lousy rep for customer service, make sure the one you buy everything works good before you pay.

Welcome to The OT!!

One scope, the Monarch has a side focus, while the Sig. Select  has an AO.

If you use Butler Creek Caps with the Burris, the cap on the objective housing will turn as you correct parallax.

Some people find this to be a pain.

Both are good, but I'd probably go with the New Monarch. A Nice feature to have 4" of fixed eye relief on a .300 RUM, although certainly not mandatory.

I saw a 3-12x yesterday and was fairly impressed.

Here's some comments I made about it.

SWFA, your host on this site, offer a 100% low price gurantee too.

Wish we could do business at SWFA you guys are lucky they have great prices and selection.  Our dollar would make it excellent right now but I understand there are substantial difficulties into trying to import scopes etc.

My bad.... Didn't see where the OP was from.

I'd still get the Nikon....

You would think shipping a scope to Canada would be no big deal. I have some of everything(3 Monarchs & some Burris & others) & I am about to buy the scope you mentioned Burris SS 4-16x44 B-plex. My intended use is for a 22-250 or 223 for dogtown & higher precision target & maybe limited hunting.  One could ask your intended use on your 300RUM? To me it seems a little high for run-of-the-mill hunting, but thats just me for how & where I hunt.

the RUM will be used primarily for Moose and Black Bear hunting with the possiblity of deer hunting.....I prefer to have a scope starting with 3 or 4 power on the low and and a minimium of 10 or 12 on the upper side of things on my hunting rifles. This way I know that I have great coverage at any distance as it is common occurance to have game anywhere from 40yrds out past 300 or 400 yrds away.......

The Burris is more than a 1/4 lb heavier than the Nikon. When the gun kicks hard it is better to have less scope weight. That might be something to think about, too.

forgot to mention that the 300 RUM has a 8 port custom muzzle brake on it. I think at this point I am leaning towards the Monarch.......its is a bit less $$$ and from what I have read so far it seems like a really good scope for the $$$

I have looked through the Monarch I was impressed, I plan to get one myself. That's my recommendation, Nikon Monarch.

Between the two I would go for the monarch.......I don't have any real experience with the nikon, but burris just turns me off with their lousy service.  If it was me it would be a conquest but don't know what you guys have to pay for them up north.

well to answer your question a conquest (4.5-14X44) is somwhere between $900 & $1000 and the nikon monarch 4-16X42 will run about $700.....
so there is a fairly large difference is price. I seen the Nikon for $450US on websites

Quite a difference I'd say. Well you guys got great hunting up there, guess thats the trade-off. I thought with the weak dollar that they would be more affordable.

don't even get started about the product prices........they seem to think we are all dumb here in Canada. Product companies are saying they can't adjust their price as they pre-ordered there items months ago so they would be lossing money if they dropped the prices to relfect the dollar value.....I also bet that when the stuff they are buying now with the high dollar hits the shelves the price won't drop either.
soon time for a road trip to Maine and just pay the duty and tax at the border on the way back.....still cheaper
