I have just purchased a Weatherby Accumark in 257 for primarily deer hunting. My shots could be as long as 300 yards or as short as 50 yards. I have been comparing three scopes primarily. A Bushnell Elite 4200 2.5x10, Leupold VX-III 3.5x10, and a Zeiss Conquest 3.5x10. Which of these three would you recommend? Also one last question, am I considering the proper power range or should I move up to say 4x14 or down to 3x9 ? I do not have money to throw away but I would like to purchase enough scope for my needs. There are so many choices out there its confusing to know which way to go. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

If you read this forum long enough you will see that I am a big fan of the Zeiss Conquest.  I personally think that a 3-9x40 is probably the most versatile balance between magnification and scope size.  And a 3-9 usually cost about $100 or so cheaper than a 3-10 from the same company.

Three very good choices.  If you want to go with an Elite 4200 or VX-III you will have to go with a 2.5-10 or 3.5-10 because they do not offer a 3-9.  If you decide to go the Zeiss route I would definitely opt for the 3-9 and save the money.

Personally I would prefer a 4-16 because you only lose a half of a power on the low end compared to a 3.5-10 but you gain SIX powers on the top end.

That caliber is super flat shooting and capable of accurate long range work, might as well have the extra power there in case you ever need it.  I know I would use 11x, 12x, 13x, 14x, 15x and 16x a lot more than I would use 3.5x.

Bushnell Elite 4200 4-16x40.....$398.99

Bushnell Elite 4200 4-16x50.....$518.99

I picked the Elite because of its quad power range (4-16 instead of 4-12), Rainguard coatings, non exposed finger adjustable windage and elevation, adjustable objective, comes with a sun shade, one year money back guarantee and it comes with a coupon to get a really nice $99.95 gear bag.

i totally agree with chris about the 4.16x40, but if you dont want to go that route, flip a coin between the conquest 3-9x40, and the 4200 2.5-10. but i urge you to with chris's ideer.
