I'm traditionally, a 4200 guy, but on All of my heavy recoiling rifles (.338, 35 whelen & .375hh), I'm a loyal luepold fan,  never had one single problem and the optics are more than clear enough for the game intended for these calibers.

Well, if it's Moose and Elk you wont need a lot of power out to 300 yards because the target/animal is big enough.  If I remember correctly Tikka is pretty light so you don't want a big, heavy scope with a big objective lens on there throwing off the balance of the rife and generally making it uncomfortable to look through because it sits so damn high.

As a result, I would recommend a 2-7x36 or 3-9x42.  Kahles is what I use on my No. 1 and No. 2 hunting rifles. There are lots on the SampleList right now that would meet your needs.  However, if you want to spend even less and still get a scope that will work very well for you, both Bushnell Elite 4200 and Nikon Monarchs get good reviews here.  I don't use them so I can't comment.

Equally as important in your case is to spend some $$$ and get really good bases and rings, given you are shooting a .338 win mag.

Good luck.

go with the zeiss conquest 3x9, you get pretty good glass with a full 4 inches of eye relief and its less than $400, save the rest for a good  set of rings and bases and still have enough for ammo.

I agree about the eye relief.  In my experience with heavy recoilers, I like at least 3.5", and 4" would be even better. Ouch  Under the hunting conditions you describe, a lot of magnifications would not be that necessary.  I'd shop for eye relief, and a nice crosshair that would suit you in lower light.  Good Luck and welcome to the forum! Smile

Since you are talking about non-dangerous game, you can pretty much take your pick.  ND2000 is on the mark with his recommendations as to power, bases and rings.

I like detachable mounts for the .338, and use Leupold rings and bases.  The .338 is a great choice, and suitable for a lot of game (including the big bears).

Thanks for the input guys, keep it comming. what are your thoughts on the illuminated reticle scopes, i've been looking at the 2.5 x 10 x 50 Kahles CSX, a little over budget but is it worth it in low light conditions? i can use all the help i can get, i ain't getting no younger.

I don't think you would need an illuminated recticle for moose and elk hunting, to be honest.  The animals are so big and the vitals are so large I wouldn't view it as necessary.

conquest would be a good choice - great glass and eye relief.
