I am looking to upgrade the optics on my Browning A-Bolt in 30.06. I hunt in western and eastern Oregon for game ranging in size from coyotes to Elk. Which scope would you go with and why? I am currently using a Leupold Vari-X II 3-9x40. Scopes I am looking at are the Leupold VX-III 2.5-8x36, VX-III 4.5-14x40 and Zeiss 3-9x40 Conquest. All with a plex/duplex reticle. The Leupolds are very appealing because if anything does ever go wrong I can drop the scope off at their headquarters in Beaverton. Other scopes under consideration are the Nikon Monarch 3-12 with side focus and the Bushnell Elite 2.5-10x40 but these scopes are hard to find at any of my local vendors so I can get a hands on opinion of them.

Zeiss 3-9X40!  Very good glass, 4" of eye relief and a great plex reticle!  Next I would pick the 4200 3-9X40.

I, personally would take the Conquest over either of those Leupolds. Better glass, for not too much more money. The Monarch, and Elite 4200 are also very nice and less money. The Zeiss carries a lifetime transferrable warranty, as I believe does the Elite. Nikon's customer service can be a pain. Leo's customer service is said to be the best in the business, but I don't think their scopes are in line with the Zeiss. Zeiss also makes a 4.5-14x44 which is nice, but then you have a side focus to worry about, and far more dollars. Some would say avoid anything that high magnification for a big game rifle, but I have one on mine, and it doesn't bother me. I'll let you decide what to buy, but I would say the Zeiss will be the nicest. Monarch and 4200 Elite are both nice. Might give the edge to the Elite. Would take any of them over the Leupys.

Here are some I would consider

might work for you. It would help if you had a budget in mind and you want to include a good set of rings and mount in your budget too.

I might add I am using a Browing A-Bolt in a 243 wssm as a varmint rifle with a Nikon scope and have been happy with it, I dont thing I have seen a bad 4200 series Bushnell, Nikon Monarch and Zeiss equipment has always been outstanding optics.

The upper end of my budget is $600.00 but I am wanting to keep it in the $400.00 range. Mounts and rings are already taken care of with Leupold bases and rings. With the opinions I am getting so far I am leaning towards the Zeiss 3x9x40. I think I need to get into Sportsmans Warehouse this weekend and do some side by side comparisons.

For what it's worth, Zeiss customer service is excellent.... I had a conquest 3x9x40, and had to send it back.  I talked to them on the phone (they were really nice) and shipped them my scope.  Within 10 days I had a brand new scope,  the new scope they sent me had the z-600 reticle...which was a very nice upgrade (they sent me a better/more expensive model than what I had before).  Based on my experience and their quality I plan to buy many more of their products.

Bushnell Elite 4200 3-9x40 -- $250

Nikon Team Primos (Monarch) 3-9x40 -- $200

Zeiss Conquest 3-9x40 -- $450 (I think)

The Bushnell or the Nikon are no brainers, great bang for $. The zeiss is maybe a slight notch up in glass, but you pay a fair chunk of change for that increment, but also is great glass for the money. I own the Bushnell and am thinking about getting the Nikon also.

While the 3-9 is the all around favorite I really like the 4.5-14 power range and the zeiss with target knobs or this Leupold would be my choice. And I would put Kenton knobs on it.

For the little extra money, I'd have a Zeiss with the target knobs. Unless you need more w/e adjustment range. the Zeiss doesn't exactly shine in that area.

For what it is worth I am the other guy asking about a Zeiss for an 30.06 a few posts ago.   I ended up getting the Zeiss Z-600 3x9 MC.  I also purchased an elite 4200 3x9 at the time due to their great value and clarity...just in case...you know.

I Just spent two weeks hunting with my new conquest.   I wished I could have found a deer worth shooting at but I did shoot plenty of rocks to bust up the boring afternoon and to familerize myself with the new scope.

The z-600 recticle is simply awesome, I could quite often hit the 600 yrd paper plate sized rock first time.  Not everytime but "quite often"   thats a freaking long way.   It shoots great at 400 yrds, hard to miss if you can shoot at all IMO.

I plan on changing out every single scope I own for the new z600 and z800 recticles. Adios to the leos and the elites...but hey thats just me.

The best advice I have ever heard when buying optics is to buy exactly what you want, not what you think you might want
