I have a 12" 22 BR barrel for my Encore that I need to scope up.  I'm looking at the Burris 2-7x or 3-12x, or the Nikon 2.5-8x.  The Leupold is out of my price range.  I'll use it for target shooting and p-dogs, possibly coyotes.  Let me know your opinions, especially personal experience with any of them.

My .223 Contender has the 2-7 Burris and it is a good fit for this purpose. For field shooting the 12x, in a handgun, is hard to steady, for target it is fine.

Welcome to O.T.

I have found a Burris 3-9x pistol scope for $100 less than a new 3-12x.  I'm thinking of getting it, 12x would be too much in the field and enough for target anyway, right?  I've actually shot my smallest group with a pistol from a 2x Leupold on a 7BR, so I think 9x would be enough.  What do you think?

I think you would be much better off for field use with the 3-9. You will still need a rest or shooting sticks afield for 9x. You don't have to crank it up, anyway. For the price difference you can't go wrong, either.

I have a 2x Leupold on a Redhawk and it has been good enough for 5" at 100 yards. I am content with this. On the other hand, the Contender cranked up to 7X and on sanbags gets under 2". Different calibers with different guns, though.

The problem with the 12x is not only the movement you pick up but the brightness as well. When hunting in low light I find that I am better off with the 2x or the Burris cranked down.

I've decided to go with the 3-9x and save some money.  I know I can shoot good group with 2x and 4x, so I'll be fine with 9x.  My smallest pistol group was actually with a 2x Leupold, .316" - 5 shots - 100yds XP-100 in 7BR.  I loved that gun!  Too bad the Citori was calling my name....

Thanks guys!

Yikes, an XP-100 in 7BR for a Citori, that's a tough one. I see far more Citoris in the field, both clay and upland, than I see XP-100's in the hands of pistoleros.

Good luck with that 3-9.

Not a tough decision when I literally put enough rounds through my Savage Fox Model B SxS to shoot the lock out of it and one lives in upland and waterfowl heaven in SD.  It wasn't a tough trade, I'll get my 7BR back some day...probably in an Encore barrel!

That 3-9X should be pretty good for your purposes. I'd think about sending it in for a tgt. elevation turret maybe if u want to go out to longer ranges with it. I use 3-12's on most of my HG's that don't have riflescopes on them, and find it works fine...with some practice, tho definitely difficult from prone with std. mounts.

I use SP's for coyotes most of the time these days, and have a good system for it. For calling i use a soft-sided stadium seat from K/Wal-Mart that i've stuffed with a little more closed-cell foam, and slipped a burlap bag over it, sewn up , and holes cut for the attachments. The side straps are resewn so the whole works can be cinched up tight to my body while sitting and calling (100X better than what they provide off the shelf). This helps tremendously for comfort and steadiness on a days hunt. I always use a tall Harris bipod with the system, and it's allowed me to make some connections way out there with bigger SP rigs from the sit. I've also done some more customizing with the "seat" that helps for walking long distances--something i do a lot of as a spot and stalk hunter these days mostly. Let me know if u're interested and i will explain.

Let us know how that rig performs. I'm working with a custom XP in 20 BR this yr. as my go to fur getter.
