I am looking for opinions on a scope to put on a 270 for elk hunting in Colorado.  I've been looking around this site and others and for the money I'm willing to part with I've come up with Nikon Buckmasters, Mueller, and Simmons Diamond Mag or Aetec.  The main reason that the mueller is in there is that I was thinking the illuminated reticle might come in handy being in the mountians and the sun disapearring long before dark.  Any thoughts on this would be really helpful.  Thanks in advance.

I am not abig fan of SImmons by any stretch of imagination.  I am not sure how important the illumination on the Mueller is, but it is a pretty good scope for the money as is Buckmaster.  Buckamster is a little better optically and has better eye relief than all Muellers except for Tac II which is made separately from other Muellers.

In the Buckmaster price range you should also look at Burris Fullfield II which I think is slightly better scope although they are close.

If I were I would not worry about illuminated reticles and get the best glass that you can afford.  One of the best bang for the buck scopes out there is probably Weaver Grand Slam 3-10x40.

Dont look past the bushnell ellites.I have two and they are just as good or better than the nikon buckmaster that i own. Also as a nativeof colorado ican say don't buy a scope with too much magnification. All of the elk i have killed have all been under 250 yards and even with a 3x9 they still looked as big as a house. Also depending on your price range the 3x9 zeiss conquest is an excellent choice. And right now swfa is having a sale on them .

Out of the scopes you mentioned I'd personally go with the Nikon Buckmaster. I have not had the opportunity to look throught the new Buckmaster but I have heard that they improved the optics over the previous gerneration.  I'd also check out the Burris Fullfield very good scope for the money.

I have a Mueller on my .17HMR and the lighted reticle is cool, the glass is "good" however, I think better glass such as the Buckmaster, Fullfield, Pentax Pioneer, and Weaver Grand Slam is better in the long run.

Also perhaps one of my favorite scopes out there is the Weaver Grandslam, very nice glass and only a bit more money then the other scopes mentioned.

Happy Shooting

I suppose that just proves that you are not the only misguided person on the forum.

Besides, he has not seen the new Buckmaster (I have at this point).  As I said Buckmaster is a nice scope, but I think FFII is a little better.

As for Grand Slam, it is better than either.  I am not sure if it is better than Mueller Tac II, but it is certainly smaller and lighter which is a plus.

I just wanted to thank you guys for all of the input.  I think, after reading your replies, I'm going to try to squeeze a few more dollars out of the paycheck nazi and go for the FFII.  If she is in a stubborn mood I'll more than likely go for the Buckmasters.  Again thanks for the info here and in this entire site.

Definately the Burrris FFII with balixtic plex.  Nikon and Weaver Grand Slam are also worth a look but neither have a reticle that helps with holdover.  Not happy with Burris short mag though my buddies 3-9 short mag had to go back to the factory - not useable over 6x.
