Hello All,

Another please help me choose thread from a total optics newbie Bucky.

Have been shooting for a couple of decades, but mostly handguns (mainly 1911's). My only experiences with a rifle was back in the Swiss Army (only iron sights) and a couple of shots through hunting rifles friends carried on trips. In other words, I never bought, mounted or even adjusted a scope, so please go gentle on me.

Recently got the itch to get a long gun and currently have a beautiful Sig 522 with heavy barrel waiting for me in California prison Loco. The 522 reminds me a lot of my old Sturmgewehr 90 in the Army (Sig 550/556??) and the one I rented at the range was a blast to shoot. It does come with iron sights (peep in the back, front post), but I think my aging eyes almost beg to put a scope on it. Will mostly be shooting at local ranges (indoor 25yrds / outdoor as far as the gun will take it), but would also like to carry it on a few varmint hunting trips (maybe a handful a year).

Doing a lot of reading on scopes over the last few days and hope to have at least gotten a very basic idea of what to look for. Budget is up to $200 (rings extra), but not mad if the cheapest one is the best option for my needs. With all that said, I currently have the following scopes on my short list and would appreciate your comments on how you think they would work with the Sig 522 and how you would spend your $$$ if in my shoes:

1) Bushnell 3.5-10x36 Banner $89.95
2) Nikon 3-9x40 Prostaff $99.95
3) Mueller 4.5-14x40 APV $129.95
4) Weaver 2.5-7x28 Classic Rimfire $139.95
5) Vortex 2-7x32 Viper $169.95 (the close out special)
6) Millett 1-4x24 DMS Tactical $199.95

Also, can or should I mount any of these while keeping the iron sights on, or will they have to come off in any event?

Aplogies for the long post with many questions on a fairly wide range of scopes and I apprecate all your insight to help me zero in on what is required/desirable for my needs.

Cheers!

Viper is the nicest glass on your list, followed by the Weaver, but the parralax on the Weaver is set at 50 yards.

Thanks for all the prompt comments. I was leaning towards the Vipers before as it looked like the best value and your replies push me further that way.

What would suggest to use for mounting the Viper on the Sig 522? Would like to stay under $75.

Also, will I need to remove the iron sights or is there a way to keep them on with the scope depending on mount I choose?

Thanks again for all your help!

Thanks again for the feedback guys Excellent!

Does anybody have a link to the SWFA mounts? For some reason I don't seem to be able to find them on the website.

Lastly, any insight on what options I have regarding the iron sights that come with my 522? Will I need to remove or is there a way to leave them on as a back up?

Thanks and have a great day!

Thanks again for all  your comments.

Another scope that was suggested to maybe better suit my needs (I think especially for the indoor 10 to 25yrds situations) is the Mueller Tactical 4.5-14x40AO.

Any experiences with that scope and/or comments on how the Vortex handles short yardage situations.

Thanks!

Taking a different approach, would I, again keeping in mind my use of the gun, installing a red dot sight? For example I see the Vortex SPARC and StrikeFire and they come with a x2 magnifier, which would probably do the job for the few time a year I will be able to take shots past 75 to 100 yard range. Valid approach?
