Due to some $$ issues I have had to reduce my price range...  I have narrowed my list to these scopes.  I want to stay in the 3-10ish range.  Which of these would you opt for and if you would give a brief explanation why.  This is going on a 270 for creek/river bottoms

Nikon
Monarch 2.5-10x42
Monarch 2.5-10x50
Monarch 3-12x42 SF (Is the Side Focus necessary?)

Leupold
VX-III 3.5-10x40
VX-III 3.5-10x50

the nikon is cheaper right now, and i have heard really good things about the new monarch, cheaptrick really likes his new monarch so i would be inclined to go that was also, i like my monarchs, they are last years models so they are a little different. only bad thing about nikon is there cs dept is spotty, leupolds is mostly spot on, but you will pay more, of course the vx3 is on sale right now too so if you wanted to buy one ever now is a pretty good time to do so.

The side focus is or is not necessary depending on how far you are shooting. The 50mm objective  can help with low light situations. I would say the Monarch either way. I think it has better image quality than Leupold you are looking at.  Now depending on what it will be used for possibly get the 50mm objective and maybe the 3-12 just depends on what your wanting to use it for. I would probably say 2.5-10x50 for creek bottoms but how far would you be shooting under 100 yards that is way to much scope. Creek Bottoms doesn't really make sense to go with this high of a powered scope unless you have 200 yard plus shots in a creek bottom. Just my two cents worth.
