sorry if this is in the wrong section....

I'd like to mount a cheap dot on my 858, i've come up with a few brands that others have recomended, does anyone know which is the better red dot?   what others should I be looking at in that price range?

Will the larger lenses be better for two eye operation, such as the 1x32, is the larger lense a good thing?

bushnell trophy 1x25, 3 M.O.A., $180

bushnell trophy T-dot 1x32, 3 M.O.A $210

vortex strikefire,(dimensions unknown) 4 M.O.A, $180

Of the 3, the only one I've owned is the Strikefire.

I bought the strikefire for a turkey gun (and to play with it, just to see how good it was.)  On the first weekend, 3rd hunt, it failed.  It has a feature that turns the reticle off after 2 hours of inactivity (or maybe 4 hours, don't recall exactly.)  On mine, once it was shut off due to inactivity, it would not come back on without removing the battery and reinserting it.

I sent it to Vortex, they immediately sent me a new one - and said this one had upgraded electronics.)  The new one has had no problems at all, it has been rock solid.

There are a few feturs of the Strikefire I really like.  First, the "on/off" is a button, not a rheostat.  When you turn it on, it comes back at the same intensity it was when turned off.  That is nice!  Also, it has a green and a red dot, which is also quite nice.
The "negatives" are that the on/off button is on the side of the scope and can be bumped by accident.  That can be remedied by a bumper or something to prevent it being hit - that was an easy fix.

The only other negative was the failure of my first.  BUT, I bought it immdiately after they released, and all the new ones have electronics that are "better" than my first one.

The Strikefire ain't bad.  The ring is crap - I stripped out the locking bolt when trying to mount it, no torque specs, it's pot metal crap.

Of the 3, I think the vortex is a bit more "tactical," and probably a better deal.

So long as it is not going on a duty weapon or home defense weapon, I'd recommend the Vortex.

Many opptions I have read about the strikefire have said the first bach(s) were a flop.  Newer ones seem to be solid.

I have never owned any, I have an Eotech have had a little trigger time with a strikefire.

Preformance wise it compares with the eotech, as far as anything else, I really dont know.

Thanks for the honest write up, I might just have to go with the vortex...  it will be put on an h.d rifle but hey, it's got a lifetime warranty which means I can't die while using it... right?  Bucky

I have owned both of the Bushnells you talk about.  I had no problems with either of the scopes.  Once they were zeroed they stayed zeroed.  Battery life was good, clearity was good.  I just recently sold them both but it wasnt because they were bad scopes.
Good Luck!

I wouldn't put them in the same league with EoTech, but they are a decent scope for the money.

While this is a tad different I have one of these on a rifle of my son's and it seems to hold up very well and has some advantages over the non magnified red dots

Really its quite a useful little scope I did have some issues with the battery not staying in place but a small piece of foam or piece of rubber band  under the cap to press gently inward seems to fix that.  I will  say it is larger than the photo looks it is a straight 30mm tube.
