I plan on hunting in South Africa with a .300 ultra mag. The range of shots taken will be most often be between 200-600 yds(but it can range from 100-800 yds). I am looking for the best option under $1000. I am considering the Burris Black Diamond 6-24x50(or possibly the 8-32x50), the Leupold Mark 4 LR/T 6.5-20x50, the XOTIC USS 4-16x56, or any other valuable suggestions. Which if any optics are better? Is there a significant difference in the 16x vs. 20x vs. 24x? Which is the easiest to calibrate elevation/bullet drop through the scope for the long distance shots? I know the Burris has yardage guidelines on their mildot scope. I think the other two have equidistant mildots nessecitating more calibration to figure the elevation. The XOTIC is suppose to have 105 MOA elevation. Is this easy to dial in for a specfic yardage to the target? It is hard to find a range up to 800 yds to get experience with bullet drop for this variety of long distance shooting. Any advice is appreciated. Thanks, John.

there is CLEARY no need for a 6x on the low end for big game to 800 yards. i have a 2003 leupold 4.5-14x40 on my 300 ultramag, and it gets me to 1000yds just fine. if your stuck on a high power scope with a ballistic reticle, i would go with a burris black diamond 4-16, or save a little money, and get the signature 4-16, either one i would get the ballistic mildot. with the 300 ultra mag, a 30mm tube is not nessesary, becuase of its flat trajectory, but with the black diamond, you do get a side focus, which will come in very handy.

What Cory said.  Exception for me would be the ballistic Plex instead of the mildot.  You are quoting some pretty long ranges for African big-game.  Unless you have experience with your PH, he is probably not going to let you take those long range shots.

very good point brady, but i would want that extra line, and those mildots for wind-comp. a buddy i know, took a animal over there at 1100 yards. but theres no sense preparing for anything over 500.

John,

I think your best option would be to consider a 4-12 or 4-16.  An 8-32 or 6-24 will severely handicap you on the closer shots (which you most likely will have more of than long shots).  The XOTIC would be the ticket but will not be here until Nov. most likely.  Ranging with mil dots and dialing the shot out to 800 yards takes a lot of practice and a lot of shooting.  I would just try to get closer if possible.  Wind can really do bad things to your trajectory at 800 yards.  If you have time, then by all means learn the art of long range shooting and mil dot range finding.  You will be glad you did.  If you do not have time I would suggest a Leica 1200 laser range finder and a bullet drop reticle scope like a Swarovski TDS, Burris Ballistic Plex or Leupold Boone and Crockett.

Swarovski 4-12x50 TDS......$958.99

Leica 1200.....$528.99

Chris,

Similar question to above.

I like the Swarovski 4-12 x 50 TDS but at $960 is it a better choice than the:

Zeiss Conquest 3-12 x 56 (ZPlex) @ $950 or

Zeiss Conquest 4.5-14 x 50 (ZPlex) @ $700 or

Leupold VXIII 4.5-14 x 50 (B&C) @ $630 ?

(Prices approximate)

I really like the TDS or B&C style reticle better than the ZPlex.
