I have researched and read a bunch as I have tried to make up my mind which top end scope to put on my # 1 deer rifle to replace my 15 year old Vari X II 3-9x50mm.

I am convinced at this point that the only way to go is the Kahles CL multi zero for several reasons.  It seems to be the best optically and the multi zero feature really makes it an economical choice since, with quick disconnect mounts, this scope can serve the purpose of giving unparalleled performance on as many as five guns.  I think I will start with two or three, giving my 300 Win Mag two or three distance settings up to 500 or 600 yards and allocating the other settings to my 243 (which shoots so flat with the 85 and 55 grain bullets I shoot in it that one setting would be sufficient out to 400 with minimal holdover practice and would extend well beyond with an additional distance setting) and perhaps to a 223 which would benefit greatly from a 400 yard setting.  I could either cover all hunting distances very well in two guns or cover them pretty well in three with one scope and two to three sets of quick disconnect mounts.  I will put older, lower quality scopes on the second and third guns as back ups and for use when the guns may need to be used at the same time.

Thanks for letting me rationalize my way to spending so much on a scope.

Now, for my question:

What CL multi zero best fits this application?

The only one I have been able to look at personally is the 4-12x52 with the 4a reticle.  I like the extra magnification and paralax adjustment of this scope for the varmint and target applications of the 243 and 223.  It is a pretty big scope and for a pure deer hunting scope I think the 3-9x42 would be superior.  My priority is the deer hunting application, but I am thinking that this will still be an excellent set up for whitetails and will be more versatile for the other applications.  I have a 4-14x42 Fullfield 2 with Ballistice plex on my 223 right now which I really like, so this would probably be the main back up scope and gives a bit more magnification for pure target shooting - I will probably leave it primarily on the 223, but might switch to quick disconnects on that gun so that I can both use the Kahles on it and take the Burris along as a backup on hunting trips.

Sorry for the long post, I include the description so that you can critque my plans and point out any flaws in my thinking.  I also hope it gives some ideas which might help others enjoy the CL line to the fullest.  If one owns a scope this nice, it seems to me it would be great to be able to use it as much as possible by switching it from gun to gun.

Thanks for your advice and suggestions on the best CL among the 3-9x42, 3-10x50, or 4-12x52 configurations.

Bobby

I am biased towards the 3-9x42.  I find scopes of this size and magnification ranges to be the best all around scopes available.

Is the 3-9x42 an AO scope?

AO seems to me almost a negative in a hunting scope, but helpful in long range, target and varmint shooting.

Could you give a few of the reasons you prefer the 3-9?

Thanks!

First, no AO.  Secondly, it is about the best trade off as far as size, weight, and magnification goes.  It is ideal for big game, and suitable for all but the longest range varmint hunting.
