The scopes I'm considering for target shooting and pd hunting are a Bushnell 4200 4-16x40 SF or a Sightron SII 4-16x42 AO.  Curious about opinions or other suggestions.  I would prefer to stay between $300 and $400 with $ 500 the the top end for this project.

Thanks

Optically speaking the 4200 seems a tad better.  I have a Sightron S2, 3-9x42 on my muzzleloader and find the optics plenty good enough for deer hunting.  I found the 4200 was a tad brighter and a tad clearer on the edges.  I found the eye relief on the Sightron much better as it was longer and was much less critical.

270XBolt, I have a 4200 6-24x40 AO and It's pretty nice.  Just needing another scope a tad smaller...I like the SF on the 4-16 Bushnell.

Any other opinions or suggestions guy?

Actually I have the 4200 4-16x40 and I think you want more magnification for prairie dogs plus target knobs.
How would you feel about a fixed power?

For pd and targets the 6.5-20 Viper is hard to beat in this price range. I have the 6.5-20X50 on a heavy barrel .223 and it is a great fit. I have no experience with the higher power Sightrons but I do have 2 3-9X42 SII Big Sky. The SII B/S and SIII (which I believe uses the same glass/coatings as the Big Sky) are a step up in glass from the plain SII and a very nice scopes with very good glass. But either one of those in a higher powered variable is going to break your budget.

With your options I would go with the 4200, I have great success with the 6x24x40

unless you wanna step up to the sII big sky the 4200 is probably a little better.

I appreciate the input.  I'm leaning toward the Bushnell right now, but I also thought about biting the bullet and getting another Zeiss 4.5-14x44.  I had one a couple of years ago and sold it because I thought it was too big for one of my deer rifles.   It Would have been about perfect for this applicationMad

I have some nice scopes including Kahles, Zeiss and two Swaros...this has kind of spoiled me, but at the same time I'd like to stay under these kind of prices for this application.

I'm not in a big hurry so I'm still open to other ideas---again at about a $500 max.

Not interested in the Vortex scopes really--I have a 4-12x40 Viper AO that really doesn't impress me. Decent for the price I paid ($239) but I really think my buddy's 4.5-14 Buckmaster is more clear and brighterSorry

I had Bushnell 4200 tactical and 3200 10x models now I have Sightron SIII 6-24x50 and SII 4-16x42 and what can I say is that I found out both sightron scopes better than bushnell means better glass , tracking more elevation

I had a 2.5-10 4200 on my .243 and thought it was nice. I replaced it with a Sightron II 4-16 for more power when coyote hunting which I thought was better. Enough better that I just bought a SII Big Sky 6-24 for my new .204. Now that one is really nice.

gotta give the edge to the 4200 .. Have both , and optically the 4200 edges out the Sightron by a nose, plus has the added advantage of Rainguard
