I have an 20" barreled AR15A2.  I would like to mount a scope on it.  I have the ARMS #2 carry handle mount and ARMS #21 STANAG 30mm rings.  I am trying to decide on a scope for this rifle and am considering the Burris Fullfied TAC30 3X-9X-40mm with the illuminated reticle and the Burris XTR-14 1X-4X-24mm.  Which would be a better all purpose scope on the carry handle mount.  I will use the carry handle mount, and I am not interested in getting a flat top at this time.  I would appreciate any opinions on these two scopes, why one would be preferred over the other.  Thanks.

I've had a little experience mounting optics on A2 uppers, but none good, none with magnifying optics anyway.

Putting a scope up there bringsabout cheek weld issues.  Be ready to add on a cheek piece to get you to the right height.

Also be aware that eye relief might become a factor. The stock/upper is configured to give you a good site picture when you are very near the rear aperture, you'll need to consider where the ocular needs to be to get a good eye relief with an optic.

Depending on what you need it to do, either scope will work.  For close shots, the 1-4 will be better than the 3-9.  For distance (200+), the 3-9 will be better at putting rounds on target.

Personally, unless my AR is of the precision variety, I prefer non-magnifying optics, Aimpoint is my preference.  I have no trouble putting shots on target out  to 300 yards with an Aimpoint.  Also, they are great for close up and cheek weld becomes less an issue as it is a reflex site with no designated eye releif.

At what range will you be shooting?
At what will you be shooting?
Are red dot sites not of interest?

My question would be: What do you intend to use the rifle for?

I use my own AR-15 for quite a bit of varmint hunting, and thus find at least a 3-9x pretty handy. Right now I am testing a 2.5-16x Bushnell 6500 on it and have had no real problems.

10633 Aimpoint CompM2 Red Dot Sight 10336, Matte finish, illuminated 4moa dot reticle, 30mm tube, Night Vision Compatible, includes forward carry handle mount, QRP flattop mount, used condition $675.00 $419.95
Normally I prefer a 2moa Aimpoint but look at the mount used with this one to see.

It will be used for coyote hunting, 3 guns matches and home defense.

The bottom line is that trying to put a scope on a carry handle gun sucks. Best solution is to put an ACOG on the carry handle or an aimpoint in front of it.
