Hi folks

I am confused by all of the ACOG models.  Can someone tell me which model I am looking for?   Here is what I want.

.223 calibrated for carry handle mount

Red chevron w/rangefinding

3.5x or 4x   (not picky here)

Carry handle mount.

Can someone tell me which one?

Thanks

Kevin

I did look at that but I still can't find the red chevron reticle calibrated for the carry handle mount.   In another write up here the model is refered to TA314 but I don't see that model anymore.  Seems like all of the .223 chevrons are calibrated for flattops.

I'm thinking about this real hard-- why would it matter if flattop or carryhandle???

Wellll.....  I'm not sure, but Trijicon does seem to specify if the sight was calibrated for carry handle or flattop.  It might not make much of a difference but ther obviously would be a difference of the optics sight line as compared to the bore's center axis.   Maybe I am making much ado about nothing here.

I think your looking at the differences in the bases between the 2 set ups, the acog has a screw in the flatop base, that when removed allows the base to drop of and the unit itself is set up to fit into the carrying handle.and vice versa if you want to use it on a flat top, the base needs to be reattached.

OK.  I know I am beating a dead horse here but I am learning as well.   In the ACOG FAQ's, Trijicon says that the height of the sight above the barrel is an issue in calibration.     Additionally, I ran some ballistics calibrations and varied the height of the site above the bore in the program.  Everything else remaining identical, the point of impact changed in every case.   All of this would seem to me that the calibration of these units IS altered by the mount.   I could be wrong but it seems there is a difference.

good a specific question, yes most ballistic programs will ask for input in ht, and adjust their out put for that, and return different results,  I use my acog for both handle and no handle and within the rest of the errors that occur between the set ups, can't tell any difference. Here is a list of reasons why:

power of scope not enough to aim at different pts on the target itself.

subtension of the chevron reticle not enough to observe

resolution of reticle not enough to indentify

es and sd of loads at 300 yds and beyond have more effect on vertical stringing than offset in a 3 or 4 x scope

scope is not mounted as secure in each set up

carrying handle is not a rigid mount, most can be torqued by hand squeeze.

given military standards at 100 yd, (just a guess here but something like 3 in.) detection would be difficult, however if it were not stated in the procurement documents or specs. in the contract would risk rejection (just a quess).

Thanks Dale.   Good stuff there.   I appreciate it.   One more question if I may.  In the article about the ACOG in this forum it talks about using the outside tips of the chevron to range a shoulder width target at a given distance.  My question is this.  Does the triangle reticle basically acomplish the same thing or does it subtend to a different dimension than the Chevron?   Does the ACOG instruction sheet cover this type of info?  Oops.  That was 2 questions.

Thanks again.

went over the faq page on trijicon site-- boy is that confusing, the ht and boreline is a problem because it is about 6-8 in ona ar. and  the muzzle velocity is a function of bullet wt, sooooo there will be a cross over pt. between a fast light bullet and a slower heavier with better bc. (and thats just the same barrel length).

in swfa site they have the same site listed with a free optional flatop adaptor, which I'm guessing is the answer to your first question, in other words, the one above it in the add is for the carrying handle.

I don't know if the tri. subtends the same as the chevron or not, but it can be calibrated if necessary.

I was in the same boat and called Trijicon direct. This was a couple of years ago and I was told that they only made a few acogs that fit and the reticle specifically calibrated for the ar15 / with carry handle mount.

If memory serves me, at the time for my situation, my options were the TA01, TA31, and TA31A.

I have the ar15 sp1 and wanted the ACOG 4x32 TA31F or TA01NSN

http://www.trijicon.com (they can answer this question best but make your purchases at SWFA. IMHO, they can probably provide you with the best price)
