Hey there duke7581.......................My personal preference is the 40mm objective. It`s lighter, has a lower profile & not quite as bulky. The difference in light transmission that the 50mm would have over the 40 mm is very slight. Your FOV would be slightly better with the 50mm. However, certainly & in no way is the difference of 10mm going to make any difference, whether you fill your freezer or not or hang your trophy........If it does,,,then it`s you and not the scope!!!...LOL...............Enjoy your Elite.......I KNOW first hand,, that you will!!!

If that is for that 7mm M70, Duke, I would get the 40. I don't like the bulkiness and looks of the big 50mm lenses on a 1" tube. I've got a 50mm on a 3.5-10 Leupold, and though it's nice, it doesn't look or handle real good on my M77 Ruger.

The bigger lense requires higher mounts and is less forgiving on the chin with rifles that kick.

You will get a larger exit pupil on the higher settings with the 50mm but I have never found a 40mm objective to be lacking in brightness at last legal light. For me the trade off isn't worth it. YMMV, but I'm with the previous guys on this.

Doug

I keep trying to find a pic of Trinidads .375 H&H. That is the only hunting stick with a 50mm lense I have seen that  looked really awesome. I believe it was an S&B 50, maybe 56mm, with a 30mm tube. It is one of the few large objective scoped rifles that I thought had a balanced look to it.

Still, in the Elite I would stick with the 40mm.
