I already know that the Primos and 4200 (3x9) are the steals in rifle scopes, that Hawk, Promaster & Zen are the same in Binos, but where are the steals in spotters?, in the $500-$700 range.

As far as "best bang for the buck" goes, I would think that the strongest contenders would be:

  • Stokes Sandpiper (well under $500)
  • Bushnell Excursion FLP (also well under $500)
  • Bushnell Elite - 80mm ($689)

For me, true "steals" are when you are able to buy a desired product at a price much lower than would be considered normal.  For example:

I managed to pick up a Leupold Golden Ring Compact (NIB and not grey market)  for $280.  That felt like a "steal."

I've recently seen (demo) Nikon ED50s w/ 13-30x eyepieces for as low as $450.  If I hadn't already bought the GR spotter I would be sorely tempted as this too seems like quite a "steal."

I was aware of the stokes sandpiper, but as in the Zen & Promaster binos I'm looking for a spotter that gives near alpha quality at mid range pricing.  Yes I want my cake and eat it too.

Besides the above models posted by lucznick, there are also models by 60mm or 65 mm Pentax and Kowa models that will give you alpha performance at about $1,000.

I paid about $700 for a Nikon ED 50mm and 20x WA eyepiece. I find that the performance is 95% of a $3000 80mm scope, and the portability is waaay better. I feel that it was a good deal.

I wanted to add a little more info:  the scope i'm looking for will be used almost exclusively at the range,  our range maxes out at 285yds and I this the farthest I'll normally practice at.  The scope I'm currently using now is a bushnell trophy 20-60x65, but its usless at anything more than 30x, and is almost embarasing.

I was just about to order the Bushnell Trophy, good thing I read this first.  What do you guys recommend for range use exclusively at similar price?  I am completely new at spotting scope - how much power would I need to see bullet holes at 200 yds?

There are probably better scopes out there for the money, but this is the spotting scope that I have and can see 22 cal holes at 200 yards.  Probably not much further, though.

I recently bought one of these Nikon ED50 "demos".  It arrived, looks, and functions like 100% NIB.  It is my first spotter and I love it.  Throw in a NIB Manfrotto 728B for $52, and you have a "steal".

The sandpiper comes in both straight and angled eye piece.  The staight can be had for $199 and comes with free 8X40 Vortex Binos.  Hows that for bang?  I just got one and am very pleased.
