AURORA, Ore. - An Aurora woman survived a frightening attack by a deer Thursday with some help from a man who literally wrestled the animal off of her.

Annie Saunders has staples in her leg and abdomen holding closed the wounds she suffered after a deer approached and then attacked her as she was getting her mail.

Saunders says she did see the deer across the road from the mailbox and that it slowly sauntered towards her. When it got close, it suddenly knocked her to the ground and began to maul her with its short antlers.

It might have been a lot worse, if one man driving by hadnít rescued her.

Leonid Afonin, who weighs in at a burly 280 pounds, says he tried to wrestle the buck off Saunders. He says he tried to break its neck but was not able to.

Biologists say a buckís neck muscles actually swell up during the mating season as they ready for battles with other males.

They say that could be one reason Afonin had a really tough time wrestling the deer off Annie Saunders.

The deer left the area and Saunders is expected to recover from her injuries.
